Castles Technology is expanding its commitment to the French payments market, with the move centred on its hub in Vélizy-Villacoublay.

The payments supplier is using the site as a regional base to support customers and partners in France and nearby markets. The operation brings together engineering, product, commercial and operational staff, serving financial institutions, merchants and technology partners.

The expansion comes as retailers, hospitality groups and operators of unattended payment environments increase investment in updated payment systems. Areas such as EV charging, vending and transport are placing greater emphasis on connected, resilient payment infrastructure, while hospitality businesses are adding mobile and self-service options.

France has become an active market for payment technology suppliers as businesses adopt Android-based systems, self-service tools and integrated payment set-ups. The sector is also dealing with changing consumer expectations and more complex regulatory demands, increasing interest in systems that can adapt over time.

Castles Technology's French team also delivers CaSERV, its managed payment services offering. The service covers estate management and support across the payment infrastructure lifecycle, alongside certification, compliance and deployment.

Market shift

The company's comments reflect a broader shift in how merchants approach payment investment. Rather than treating payment terminals as standalone hardware purchases, many businesses are looking for broader platforms and support services tied to day-to-day operations.

That trend is especially visible in sectors where payment reliability directly affects trading volumes. In retail, operators want greater flexibility at the point of sale, while in hospitality and unattended settings the focus has shifted to ease of use, mobility and system uptime.

Research carried out by Castles Technology has examined the changing role of hospitality point-of-sale systems, the importance of payment resilience during peak demand and the development of unattended payments. Those themes suggest merchants are linking payment upgrades to broader efforts to reshape customer journeys and connect business systems more closely.

The French base plays a particular role in that strategy, giving the group a local operating presence in one of Europe's larger payments markets. It also reflects the importance suppliers place on in-country support as merchants and financial institutions navigate certification rules, compliance requirements and rollout programmes.

Local support

Jean-Philippe Niedergang outlined the company's position as it increases its focus on France.

"France continues to lead the way in the adoption of modern payment technology across retail, hospitality and unattended environments. Businesses are no longer simply choosing payment terminals. They are investing in platforms and services that can evolve alongside their operations. Having an experienced local team, backed by engineering expertise and managed services through CaSERV, allows us to work much more closely with customers and partners, supporting them through that transition while continuing to invest in the French market for the long term," said Jean-Philippe Niedergang, Chief Executive Officer, EMEA, Pacific and LATAM, Castles Technology.

Castles Technology operates globally in payment acceptance technology and works with banks, merchants, fintech groups, acquirers, independent software vendors and payment service providers. It has deployed millions of point-of-sale terminals worldwide.

Its push in France underlines how competition in the European payments market is increasingly shaped by local delivery as much as by devices and software. For suppliers, a domestic presence can matter when customers need support spanning technical integration, regulation and ongoing operations.

In France, that matters across a broad customer base, from retailers modernising checkout systems to unattended operators seeking dependable card acceptance in locations where service interruptions can quickly affect revenue. The same pressure applies to hospitality groups balancing front-of-house speed, staff mobility and changing customer preferences around payment.

By highlighting local engineering and managed services alongside Android payment products, Castles Technology is positioning its French operation around long-term customer support rather than hardware sales alone. The Vélizy-Villacoublay team supports customers throughout the lifecycle of their payment infrastructure.
