Commvault expands Azure recovery with Cloud Rewind

Commvault has expanded Cloud Rewind to cover more Microsoft Azure resources for configuration protection and recovery, extending support for cloud-native application recovery in Azure environments.

The update triples Azure protection and now covers 62% of enterprise-relevant Azure resource types on the market. Cloud Rewind is designed to restore cloud applications alongside the infrastructure, configurations, and dependencies they need to run after cyberattacks or outages.

The change reflects a broader challenge for companies recovering disrupted cloud environments. Commvault cited research from Absolute Security's 2026 State of Enterprise Cyber Resilience report, which found that 57% of enterprises said recovery from a cyberattack took more than 4.5 days on average.

Instead of relying on manual rebuilding, the product continuously discovers cloud resources, maps application dependencies, and co-ordinates recovery and rebuild processes from a single platform. Organisations can also test recovery readiness through application recovery simulations, including in isolated air-gapped environments before an incident occurs.

Broader coverage

The latest changes also deepen the link between Cloud Rewind and Commvault's backup and recovery tools. Protection Groups are meant to bring application data and cloud configuration together in a single air-gapped recovery workflow, letting teams plan and execute recovery from one place rather than across separate products.

Another addition is policy-based protection for dynamic cloud estates. The system can automatically enrol discovered resources by tag, region, and type across multiple cloud environments through a single workflow, reducing the manual effort of adding resources one by one.

Customers in sectors with operationally sensitive workloads have highlighted the importance of recovering infrastructure alongside data. Allcargo Group Companies, which operates in global logistics, pointed to the effect outages can have on supply chains and customer service.

Recovery gap

The expansion comes as businesses place more applications, data stores, and AI-related workloads in public cloud environments, making recovery plans more dependent on restoring settings and interconnections as well as raw data. In practice, an application may rely on several linked Azure services, identity settings, networking rules, and storage configurations that must be rebuilt in the right order.

Commvault said the new coverage addresses that complexity. Its cloud application protection product is offered as an add-on workload within Commvault Cloud, with pricing based on the number of protected cloud resources.

"Cloud Rewind helps organizations recover cloud applications through a unified experience in Commvault Cloud, increasing customers' confidence in their ability to recover following a cyberattack or outage."

Industry analysts have also pointed to the risk of recovery plans that appear complete on paper but fail to account for cloud dependencies. Omdia said that gap often becomes clear only after a disruption.

"Many organizations discover their recovery plan is incomplete only after an incident has occurred," said Melinda Marks, Senior Research Director and Chief Analyst, Omdia.

"As applications and their associated cloud resources become more complex, organizations need an effective way to rapidly recover, with restoration capabilities across configurations, dependencies, and multiple cloud platforms."
