BT to power easyJet crew devices with eSIM network

BT has struck an agreement with easyJet to provide mobile connectivity across the airline's European operation, covering flight crew devices and other equipment used at airports and on aircraft.

The deal centres on 23,000 mobile connections delivered through the EE mobile network. BT said the connections will sit across easyJet's network in 35 countries and more than 150 airports.

easyJet plans to use the service across a range of devices used by pilots, cabin crew and other staff. BT said the set-up will give flight crew access to flight information and training materials while on duty away from base.

Devices In Scope

BT said the work includes connectivity for iPads used by pilots and cabin crew. The company also cited smartphones, mobile phones and aircraft phones for communication between colleagues.

BT said it will also supply laptops and other hardware for workers as part of the arrangement.

The announcement also referenced smart messaging for customers. BT said this element will keep passengers updated about their flight.

eSIM Approach

All devices covered by the project will use eSIMs rather than physical SIM cards, according to BT. The company described eSIMs as a way to manage mobile connectivity through remote set-up and configuration.

BT said the eSIM approach will simplify logistics for a business that operates across borders. It also set out a series of expected outcomes, including enhanced security and lower costs.

BT also said eSIMs reduce waste compared with traditional SIM cards. The company linked this to a broader improvement in user experience for staff who rely on mobile devices during day-to-day operations.

The agreement sits within BT Business, which sells communications services to UK organisations. EE forms part of BT's mobile network offering in the UK.

Airlines have increased their use of mobile and tablet-based workflows across flight operations in recent years. They have also expanded the use of digital messaging for passenger updates as operational disruption and airspace constraints place pressure on customer communications.
