Zapata partners QuEra to develop quantum use cases

Zapata Quantum has partnered with QuEra to develop quantum computing use cases aimed at improving the commercial prospects for applications before fully fault-tolerant hardware becomes available.

The work will combine QuEra's neutral-atom quantum computing roadmap with Zapata's focus on algorithms and application development. The goal is to address a gap between advances in quantum hardware and the availability of practical business applications.

Under the arrangement, Zapata will help identify the enterprise use cases that matter most, assess when they may become practical, and develop the applications and algorithms needed to run on future systems. The partnership also supports QuEra's work with enterprises, government programmes and high-performance computing centres seeking to design and validate applications ahead of full fault tolerance.

The tie-up sits within the QuEra Quantum Alliance Program, which is intended to bring together organisations working across different parts of the quantum stack. For QuEra, it adds an application development partner as the company pursues a roadmap towards a fault-tolerant machine accessible through AWS.

Quantum computing companies have increasingly shifted attention from headline hardware milestones to the harder question of whether customers will have useful tasks ready when larger, more reliable systems arrive. That has pushed software specialists and hardware developers into closer partnerships, particularly in pharmaceuticals, finance, materials and defence, where advocates argue quantum systems could eventually tackle problems that are difficult for classical machines.

Zapata describes itself as hardware-agnostic, developing software and applications designed to work across different quantum approaches rather than for a single machine design. QuEra, by contrast, is focused on neutral-atom quantum computing, one of several competing architectures being pursued across the industry.

Neutral-atom systems use individual atoms as qubits and have drawn attention as one possible route to scaling quantum processors. QuEra traces its roots to research at Harvard and MIT and operates from Boston, New Mexico, Tokyo, Zurich and the United Kingdom.

For Zapata, the partnership adds to a broader strategy of aligning with larger technology groups and quantum hardware companies. The company recently announced an ongoing partnership with NVIDIA focused on applying agentic AI to quantum algorithm development, underscoring its effort to combine quantum software research with advances in artificial intelligence.

The commercial question remains central to both companies' message. Quantum hardware has made technical progress, but fully fault-tolerant systems capable of running complex workloads reliably are still under development, leaving many prospective users uncertain about when to invest in application design and where to focus their efforts.

Roadmap focus

QuEra is working towards a megaquop-class system through AWS in 2028, a milestone that gives application developers a target for planning. In the meantime, partnerships like this are intended to ensure useful workloads are tested and refined before the hardware reaches that stage.

Zapata says its work spans cryptography, pharmaceuticals, finance, materials discovery and defence. It also says it has participated across all technical areas of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking programme and has worked with Fortune 500 companies and government agencies on quantum-related projects.

Its research profile received a boost when a study on quantum-enabled drug discovery was recognised as one of Nature Biotechnology's Top 10 Papers of 2025. That supports the company's pitch to customers as a group seeking to connect theoretical quantum advances with specific industry tasks.

QuEra has made a similar case for practical preparation, arguing that customers should begin co-designing applications before large-scale fault-tolerant machines are ready. The latest partnership reflects that approach by pairing a hardware developer with a software company specialising in identifying and shaping potential workloads.

Sumit Kapur, Chief Executive Officer of Zapata Quantum, outlined that view in the company's announcement. "QuEra's commitment to delivering a megaquop-class system via AWS in 2028 is exciting for the field and something we're looking forward to supporting from the application side," Kapur said.

"We are uniquely positioned as a hardware-agnostic partner to help enterprises identify which quantum use cases matter, assess when they will become viable, and develop the applications and algorithms needed to drive transformational business value as these systems come online," he added.

Yuval Boger, Chief Commercial Officer at QuEra Computing, said the company sees application work as integral to making quantum systems useful to customers. "By pairing QuEra's leadership in fault-tolerant quantum computing with Zapata's focus on application development, we can further accelerate the path from quantum capability to commercial value," Boger said.
