UK businesses unprepared for 2027 PSTN network switch
UK businesses remain largely unprepared for the imminent switch from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to all-IP networks, according to recent research by Zen Internet.
The study highlights that beyond voice services, essential systems such as payment processing, CCTV, security devices, and IoT solutions could face disruption if organisations fail to migrate in a timely manner. With the phased shutdown of PSTN and ISDN networks set to conclude in 2027, preparation is becoming critical.
Data reveals that only 18% of small businesses and 26% of large businesses currently have a post-PSTN solution ready. Combined, 27% of enterprises are considering their options, 17% are unsure of their next steps, and 19% are in the process of migrating to a new system.
Alarmingly, nearly 9% of businesses remain unaware of the impending 'landline' network switch off. This indicates a significant gap in communication and preparedness across the business landscape in the UK.
The transition to an all-IP network marks a fundamental technological shift. Businesses relying on PSTN could face significant connectivity challenges if they do not act swiftly. After December 2025, businesses might receive as little as 90 days' notice to complete their migration to all-IP solutions or risk losing access to critical communication and operational systems.
David Barber, Strategy Director at Zen, points out the disparity between awareness and action, stating, "While our research shows good awareness that the switch off is happening there's a clear disconnect between knowing about the end of PSTN and having a future-proof solution in place. Too many businesses may be leaving decisions around all-IP communications to the last minute, which could be a recipe for disruption."
There are compelling reasons to start the transition to all-IP connectivity early. The obsolescence of the PSTN network is leading to increased downtime and maintenance difficulties. Delaying the transition past the deadline could result in complete loss of phone connectivity, as well as disruption to systems like security, payments, and IoT devices reliant on PSTN.
Barber advises businesses, "There's no need to panic, but preparation is key. Businesses should start thinking about the options open to them now. Check what's available in your area, conduct an audit of all systems that rely on the old network, and talk to your technology partners. At Zen, we're always happy to run through what PSTN means for our customers."
Transitioning to all-IP can offer continuity and new opportunities for enhanced features and flexibility in communications. Early adopters can take advantage of the benefits of digital technology and potentially gain a competitive edge.
Barber concludes, "Making the switch ahead of the deadline not only mitigates risks but positions businesses to unlock the full potential of all-IP services. With the right preparation, this shift can be a growth opportunity rather than a challenge."
