Sixthfin launches AI tool to spot expense claim patterns

Sixthfin has launched a travel and expense control product, T&E Controls, aimed at finance, audit and internal control teams.

The software analyses expense claims over time and matches them against the general ledger, rather than checking each transaction in isolation. It is designed to work alongside existing expense management tools and review claims across several months, employees and entities.

The launch reflects a broader shift in finance oversight from spot checks to wider data analysis. While expense systems have automated many front-end checks and line manager approvals, Sixthfin argues that gaps can remain when patterns are only visible across a larger population of claims.

Those gaps can include duplicate claims, repeated anomalies, approval failures, ignored alerts and recurring delegations. According to Sixthfin, such issues may not be visible when expenses are reviewed one by one.

Pattern detection

One example cited by Sixthfin involved multiple expense claims reimbursed to different employees with the same supplier, amount and location on the same day. Each claim appeared compliant on its own and had already been approved, but the pattern emerged only when the full set of reports was analysed.

The approach extends beyond claims data. The software also checks approval workflows and accounting records to identify unusual approval delays, repeated delegation patterns and alerts that were not addressed.

It also reconciles expense records with accounting data, which can expose expense reports that do not appear in the books, ledger entries with no equivalent in the expense tool, and differences between approved and recorded amounts.

Control framework

Expense reports represent a high volume of transactions for many organisations, often involving relatively low-value individual claims. In that environment, manual review tends to rely on limited samples, which can miss higher-risk cases or fail to show whether a control framework is working consistently over time.

Sixthfin says the product is intended to help finance and control teams measure the effectiveness of controls across all expenses rather than through sample-based testing. It also uses artificial intelligence to surface recurring patterns and exceptions that warrant further investigation.

The business focuses on risk detection and financial process optimisation for finance, control and audit functions. Founded in 2020 with a product called Geoficiency, Sixthfin has since expanded its range to include closing tools for account analysis and period-end processes, alongside the new travel and expense product.

The platform is now deployed in 70 countries and used by more than 1,000 companies, including ADP, Saint-Gobain and RAJA. Sixthfin says its systems analysed more than EUR €200 billion in 2025.

Jean-Marc Allouët, President of Sixthfin, said the product reflects a change in how organisations monitor expenses.

"Expense control is evolving, and checking occasionally that an expense complies with the rules is no longer enough. Today, it is about making sure the system works over time. For Finance, Audit and Internal Control departments, this means being able to measure the effectiveness of controls, spot behavioural anomalies, and rely on all the data available rather than on simple samples," said Allouët.
