CaixaBank deepens Google Cloud deal to boost AI use
Mon, 12th Oct 2026 (Today)
CaixaBank has expanded its collaboration with Google Cloud, extending a technology partnership that began in 2023.
The broader agreement will run until 2033 and covers artificial intelligence, data management, analytics and cloud infrastructure. CaixaBank plans to use it to develop internal tools for employee decision-making and to tailor products and services for customers.
At the centre of the deal is the deployment of Gemini Enterprise, Google Cloud's platform for building and managing AI agents. Teams across the bank will use those agents for tasks including synthesising financial information, automating routine processes and summarising complex content.
The move adds to a broader push by banks to bring generative AI into day-to-day operations while maintaining tight controls over data, governance and security. Financial institutions across Europe have been testing AI for customer service, compliance, document handling and internal productivity, but many have moved cautiously because of regulatory scrutiny and the sensitivity of customer information.
CaixaBank outlined three areas for the expanded collaboration. The first is data analytics and what it called agentic AI, with the bank aiming to turn large internal data sets into usable insights. In practice, that includes document management, classification and summarisation to support internal decision-making.
The second is infrastructure and security. CaixaBank will combine its private environment with Google Cloud infrastructure to improve resilience, scalability and service availability as demand grows. The project also includes threat detection and security monitoring, operating within the bank's governance, privacy and responsible AI framework.
The third is workforce training. The agreement includes professional services, joint initiatives and training courses designed to help employees adopt the new systems and tools. That reflects a broader challenge for large financial groups introducing AI: the technology itself is only part of the change, and staff training often determines how quickly systems are used at scale.
CaixaBank is one of Spain's largest banks and has more than 13 million digital customers, which it says is the country's biggest digital customer base in banking. That scale helps explain the focus on tools that can support both internal operations and customer-facing services.
In recent years, the bank has made innovation central to its strategy, using technology projects to refine the customer experience and improve efficiency. Expanding its Google Cloud relationship suggests CaixaBank wants to deepen its use of external cloud and AI services rather than rely only on in-house systems.
For Google Cloud, the deal adds another large European banking client at a time when major cloud providers are competing for regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, and government. Winning and expanding banking contracts has become increasingly important as cloud groups seek long-term workloads tied to data storage, analytics, security and AI tools.
These projects are also more complex than standard cloud migrations. Banks must balance the appeal of newer AI systems with restrictions around privacy, explainability, model oversight and operational risk. CaixaBank's emphasis on a hybrid model, combining a private environment with cloud services, underlines how many large lenders are trying to modernise without moving everything to the public cloud.
The use of AI agents is likely to draw attention because it points to a more operational role for generative AI inside the bank. Rather than limiting AI to simple chat interfaces or narrow pilots, CaixaBank is signalling that it wants software agents to support information-heavy workflows across teams. In banking, those workflows often include reading reports, handling documentation, classifying records and extracting information from large volumes of text.
No financial terms were disclosed. The bank did not say how many employees would use the systems initially or when specific tools would be introduced, but said the work would be carried out under its existing security, privacy and responsible AI frameworks.
The agreement also shows how banks are framing AI adoption less as a stand-alone experiment and more as part of a broader overhaul of data architecture, security controls and employee workflows. In that sense, the CaixaBank-Google Cloud deal is not just about access to new software tools, but also about how a major retail and commercial bank organises information and decisions across its business.
CaixaBank said the expanded collaboration will focus on improving operational decision-making for employees while increasing the personalisation of products and services for its millions of customers.
