Photoroom has launched its Shopify listing app on Android, making the tool available on Android, iOS and web.

The launch extends Photoroom's product listing workflow to merchants who run their businesses primarily from mobile devices. Shopify sellers can now create, edit and publish listings from a phone, while moving between mobile and desktop through a shared catalogue.

The product is designed to reduce the number of steps involved in building an online listing. Instead of switching between image editing, copy creation, metadata entry and publishing tools, merchants can complete those tasks in a single workflow linked to Shopify.

Features include batch editing for up to 250 products at a time, automated title and search metadata generation, and tools called AI Shot List and Listing Score. Listings can then be published directly to Shopify from within the app.

The release marks a broader shift for Photoroom, which has been known mainly for image-editing tools used by online sellers. With Android, it is moving further into eCommerce content management, from initial product photography to the finished product page.

Dan Spooner, Product Lead at Photoroom, outlined the problem the company is trying to address for smaller retailers.

"For most independent retailers, creating product listings isn't difficult because they can't take a good photograph. It's difficult because it's one of the most repetitive parts of running an online business. Every product needs images, descriptions, organisation and publishing across multiple channels. We've spent years helping merchants create better images. The next step is helping them build better listings," Spooner said.

He added: "With today's Android launch, any seller can now do that entirely from their phone."

Retailer results

Photoroom cited customer results from brands using its tools in their commerce operations. UK sportswear retailer Layer reported a 50% increase in online sales, while US workwear brand Ameliora said it improved conversion rates by 30%. Fashion retailer Palm Angels used the software to launch a capsule collection in four days.

Layer offers a clearer view of how smaller sellers are using such tools. The business is run by founder Dan Bacon and his partner, and had previously relied on traditional photography to produce website imagery. A full-day shoot cost about £500 and covered around 25 to 30 products, according to the company.

The process also created practical issues. Lighting consistency could affect colour accuracy, while details such as linings and pockets were harder to show clearly in standard shoots.

Layer now uses the app to create product images and lifestyle scenes, edit assets and send them back to its Shopify store. The retailer also uses it to highlight design details in products such as two-in-one running shorts and to create motion-based assets for social media.

Bacon described the difference in cost and workflow.

"When I think we paid £500 for one photographer compared to what we pay for Photoroom, it's not even close. It's a no-brainer. It's so easy. All your images are just there. You edit them, and they're straight back on your website before you know it," said Dan Bacon, Founder at Layer.

He gave a second example from the company's day-to-day use of the tool.

"In Photoroom, I did it in about five minutes, and it looked perfect. It's only simple, but it just adds a little bit extra. And we're seeing so much more engagement, so many more followers and likes on our socials," Bacon said.

Bacon said the software had also changed how the small business presents itself online.

"From the outside, our website looks like we're bigger than just a team of two. I'm really proud of how far we've come. Just try it. Photoroom has changed the way we work. It's changed our output. It's changed the professionalism of not just our website, but our whole business. If you're sat on the fence, just give it a go," he said.

Platform strategy

Shopify is the product's first commerce platform connection. That suggests Photoroom is testing a tighter integration model with eCommerce systems rather than remaining solely a visual content tool.

The Android, iOS and web versions now run from the same catalogue engine, allowing products to be captured on mobile, refined on desktop and managed across devices from a single source of information.

Founded in 2019, Photoroom says it processes more than seven billion images each year across its mobile, web and API products. It also says it is used by more than one million businesses and 300 million people in more than 180 countries, including customers such as DoorDash and Depop.

The Android launch gives Photoroom a full cross-platform offering for Shopify sellers, as software providers increasingly target independent merchants with tools designed to cut the cost and effort of listing products online.
