IWD 2024: Empowering women in tech: Measuring success one day at a time
Fri, 8th Mar 2024

As we celebrate International Women's Day, I'm prompted to reflect on my journey in the world of technology, where I’ve come from to get to my position today, and the invaluable lessons learned along the way.

My career path wasn't meticulously planned; it has evolved organically as I embraced the opportunities that came my way. Keeping an open mind and being willing to explore and work towards different avenues has been key to my progression. On International Women’s Day, it’s important to acknowledge that women should be able to pursue their ambitions at their own speed, one day at a time.

Joining the UK's largest independent technology retailer, Ebuyer marked a turning point in my career journey. Driven by a passion for technology and a desire for growth, I took a leap of faith and transitioned to a new role as a new Business Sales Executive. Here, my enthusiasm for technology, particularly in the public sector, was recognised and rewarded. In just three years, I worked my way up the ladder to the position of Education Lead, where I had the opportunity to combine my expertise in sales with my personal commitment to improving educational opportunities for young people.

My dedication and expertise caught the attention of Sync, a leading tech specialist based in Manchester. I was offered the role of Regional Education Manager and tasked with spearheading Sync's efforts to revolutionise classroom learning through cutting-edge technology integration, from primary school level right up to university. It was a role that resonated deeply with me, as I embraced the opportunity to empower schools and educators with the technology they needed to prepare students for their futures in the digital age.

My role at Sync presented challenges, particularly in overcoming feelings of doubt and imposter syndrome, which many women may endure when they enter STEM careers. However, with the support of my colleagues and belief in my abilities, I was able to navigate through such uncertainties and emerge stronger.

Resilience has been a constant companion throughout my journey. In an industry as dynamic as technology, the ability to adapt to change and learn from setbacks is crucial. Every obstacle encountered has served as a stepping stone towards personal and professional growth.

As we advance in our careers, it becomes increasingly important to empower and uplift other women in technology, offering support as they navigate their unique journeys, one day at a time. Success in this field often doesn't come overnight, nor do we immediately uncover our true career calling. By acknowledging and celebrating the small victories along the way, we contribute to a more fulfilling and rewarding outcome in the end.
