Isle of Man seeks health tech for 2026 Innovation Challenge
The Isle of Man government has opened applications for its 2026 Innovation Challenge, which will focus on technology for health and social care.
The programme invites tech teams and entrepreneurs from outside the island as well as local firms. Organisers said the goal is to identify new products and services for a sector that is increasing its use of digital tools.
The Department for Enterprise is running the Challenge through its executive agencies. It is working with the Department of Health and Social Care, Manx Care, and Public Health Isle of Man.
Ministers and organisers said the initiative reflects pressure on health services and expectations for more joined-up care. They pointed to rising demand, staff shortages, and a shift towards more integrated care.
Three themes
The 2026 Innovation Challenge sets out three focus areas called Working Smarter, Wellness and Home First.
Working Smarter covers tools that change how health systems operate, connect and communicate. The programme material links this theme to capacity in services and to patient and staff experience.
Wellness covers prevention and earlier intervention. It also covers self-care and community-based support.
Home First covers services outside hospitals and clinics. It includes care delivered in homes and in community settings.
The organisers also announced a Biosphere Award. It will go to a finalist that shows "the greatest commitment to positively contributing to the Biosphere".
Testbed approach
Officials described the Isle of Man as a "testbed environment". Finalists will be able to pilot and scale products on the island, according to the programme description.
The programme also offers access to senior health leaders and a digital ecosystem on the island. It includes regulatory support from government partners.
Finalists will take part in mentoring and networking. The programme also promises international exposure and a showcase in front of an expert panel.
Applications remain open until late February 2026. The programme expects to announce finalists in early April. The organisers plan a final showcase event in June 2026 where judges will select winners.
Shift in focus
The Innovation Challenge has previously focused on FinTech, Cleantech, and Data and AI. The organisers said the 2026 edition marks a move into health and social care.
The organisers said the programme has attracted more than 130 businesses from more than 20 countries since it started. The selection process includes a shortlist stage and a final presentation.
The programme information says selection criteria include "ambition, market potential, and scalability". It says the cohort will develop solutions over subsequent months ahead of the final event.
Winners will receive ongoing access to mentors, potential investors and regulatory guidance for six months after the showcase, according to the programme material.
Minister comments
The government said the Innovation Challenge fits its broader economic approach. It also reflects links between digital policy and public service delivery.
Tim Johnston MHK, Minister for Enterprise, said: "Refocusing this year's Innovation Challenge on health and social care enables us to tackle some of the most urgent issues facing society today.
"The Isle of Man offers a uniquely collaborative environment where innovative companies can test, refine, and prove solutions with direct access to government, healthcare partners, and a fast-moving digital ecosystem."
Health leaders said the programme will prioritise delivery models outside hospitals as well as digital tools.
Claire Christian MHK, Minister for Health and Social Care, said: "This Challenge is about transforming lives by piloting solutions that put people first and bring care closer to home. By harnessing emerging technologies, we aim to set a new benchmark for what's possible in healthcare - delivering better outcomes, greater wellbeing, and a health system ready for the future."
Digital Isle of Man said the initiative builds on the programme's earlier themes.
Lyle Wraxall, Chief Executive, Digital Isle of Man, said: "The Innovation Challenge has always been about solving real-world problems through collaboration. Expanding into Health and Social Care is a natural evolution, reflecting our commitment to focus innovation where it matters most, improving lives and strengthening essential services. This is an opportunity for innovators to make a lasting impact on one of society's most critical public services."
"If you are a tech business, whether already working in digital health or simply looking for a real-world opportunity to apply your technology in new ways, we want to hear from you. The Isle of Man offers a uniquely collaborative environment where innovative companies can test, refine, and prove solutions with direct access to government, healthcare partners, and a fast-moving digital ecosystem. This is the moment for ambitious innovators to get involved and help shape the future of Health and Social Care."
The organisers said they will announce finalists in April 2026 ahead of the June showcase.
