Bios Life emerges with USD $25 million seed & Tempus deal

Bios Life has emerged from stealth with USD $25 million in seed funding and a multi-year alliance with Tempus. It will focus on cancer surveillance for survivors and people at higher risk.

The seed round was led by Redmile, Vsquared Ventures and Kindred Capital, with backing from healthcare and technology investors in the United States and Europe. Alongside the financing, Bios Life has agreed to use de-identified oncology datasets from Tempus to train and validate its predictive models, while integrating genetic screening from Ambry Genetics into its services.

The Boston-based company is entering a crowded oncology technology market with a model that combines software, genomics and direct patient care. It is building a virtual clinic for cancer survivors and others at elevated risk, aiming to replace periodic screening with continuous monitoring based on clinical, laboratory and genomic information.

Its target market is substantial: more than 40 million people in the US are either cancer survivors or face heightened cancer risk. More than 40% of people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and more than 30% of those cases are identified at stage 3 or 4.

Bios Life says its system creates a continuously updated digital profile of a patient's risk. It also holds commercial rights to the Nucleotide Transformer genomics model developed by BioNTech-InstaDeep, which can interpret genomic signals at single-nucleotide resolution and assess the effect of rare and previously uncharacterised genetic variants.

Founding team

The launch also highlights a founding team drawn from BioNTech and other health technology groups. Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Richardson is a former Chief Strategy Officer at BioNTech and former Chairman of InstaDeep. Co-founder and Chief Operating and Business Officer Zach Taylor is a former Senior Vice President at BioNTech.

Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer Logan Frank is a board-certified radiologist and former Director of Breast Radiology at the University of Missouri. The wider management team includes Geoff Hyde, Head of Product and Engineering, formerly of One Medical and Galileo, and Thomas Pierrot, Head of Artificial Intelligence, who previously led the genomics AI research program at InstaDeep.

The company's approach reflects a broader push across healthcare to use artificial intelligence to identify disease risk earlier and manage patients outside traditional hospital settings. In oncology, developers have sought to use larger datasets and genomic analysis to improve screening, but bringing those tools into routine care has proved difficult because of fragmented records, patchy access to testing and uneven follow-up.

Its partnership with Tempus is intended to address part of that problem by providing access to multimodal oncology data for model development. Through Tempus-owned Ambry Genetics, Bios Life plans to integrate hereditary cancer testing into its preventive platform and physician-ordered testing into its survivorship program.

For investors, the deal signals confidence in a model that blends clinical services with proprietary technology at a time when funding for digital health has become more selective. Investors have increasingly favored companies that can show a clear route to clinical use and reimbursement rather than stand-alone software tools.

Richardson outlined the company's ambition in a statement on the launch. "Tens of millions of high-risk individuals and cancer survivors lack access to cutting-edge care which is tailored to their particular needs and their unique biology. Bios Life is building a novel technology portfolio and specialized care delivery model to uniquely serve these individuals at a level that has not been possible until now - one that is deeply personalized and delivered at scale. The support of world-class partners and investors at launch gives us the foundation to become a category-defining company in this emerging space," said Ryan Richardson, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bios Life.

Clinical need

Clinicians working in cancer survivorship have long argued that surveillance has not kept pace with the growing number of patients living beyond an initial diagnosis. Follow-up often depends on standard schedules and one-off tests rather than an evolving picture of risk that incorporates genetics, prior treatment and lifestyle factors.

Kevin Oeffinger, Director of the Duke Cancer Institute Centre for Onco-Primary Care, described that gap in stark terms. "Cancer screening and surveillance have been at a relative standstill for the past 20-30 years. The vast majority of individuals at elevated risk of cancer are not screened according to standard-of-care guidelines, and one out of every five newly diagnosed cancers in the US is found in cancer survivors. The AI-enhanced virtual model developed by Bios Life has the potential to greatly enhance the delivery of care to these high-risk populations; this is a game changer. Utilizing AI tools with a genetic and lifestyle backbone will move us from stagnation to the long-promised potential of personalized and precise cancer screening," said Kevin Oeffinger, MD, Director of the Duke Cancer Institute Centre for Onco-Primary Care.

Tempus framed the alliance as part of a broader shift in oncology from treatment alone toward earlier risk detection and monitoring.
