Atos releases Premier League fixture list for 2026-27

Atos has produced the fixture list for the 2026-27 Premier League season, extending a relationship with the league that began in 1992.
That partnership has now spanned 34 Premier League seasons, 13,166 matches and 51 clubs. Building each season's schedule typically starts at the beginning of the year and takes about six months.
Atos's system generates an initial schedule, which human reviewers then test and adjust against the league's sporting and operational constraints. These include limits on long runs of home or away games, a balance of home and away fixtures across five-match blocks, and restrictions on how clubs can begin and end the season.
Organisers must also account for local rivalries, police availability and transport pressures. Travel demands around peak periods such as Boxing Day and New Year's Day also shape the final list, with an emphasis on reducing the burden on supporters where possible.
Even small changes can have wider effects because moving one match can force revisions elsewhere. As a result, fixture compilation still relies on manual checks alongside computer modelling.
Glenn Thompson, who has compiled Premier League fixtures for Atos for more than 30 years, described the pressure points in the process.
"There are pinch points in the process where it can become stressful, culminating in several days in a room manually checking for any issues that may have cropped up. The whole process is complex, involving many different data points. Ultimately, you can't satisfy everyone and it's a compromise across all clubs without favouring any one club," said Glenn Thompson, Fixture-List Compiler, Atos UK&I.
Balancing demands
This year's schedule was shaped by the growing demands of the wider football calendar. Player welfare, recovery time between matches and alignment with international competitions were more prominent considerations in drawing up the list.
That reflects a broader shift in elite football, as domestic leagues, cup competitions and international tournaments compete for space in an already crowded season. For schedulers, the fixture list is no longer only an exercise in balancing stadium use, travel and policing, but also one of managing rest periods and fixture congestion.
The Premier League's "Golden Rules" still form the basis of the process. In any run of five matches, clubs should generally have either three home games and two away games or the reverse, while no team should have more than two home or two away matches in succession.
Clubs should also be home and away around FA Cup ties where possible. Another core rule is that no side should start or finish the campaign with two consecutive home games or two consecutive away games.
Those principles are straightforward in isolation but difficult to maintain across a division-wide programme. Once local derbies, shared city infrastructure and public transport patterns are added, the number of workable combinations narrows quickly.
Sports focus
Atos has maintained a dedicated sports and major events unit for more than 30 years. Beyond the Premier League, it also works with football bodies including UEFA and CONMEBOL.
The group employs about 56,000 people and reports annual revenue of about €7.2 billion. It operates in 54 countries under the Atos and Eviden brands.
Football fixture scheduling has become one of the more visible examples of how data systems are used in sports administration. While supporters mainly encounter the final list when it is published, the underlying process has grown more complex as leagues seek to balance fairness, operational risk and commercial demands.
For the Premier League, the annual release remains a key moment because it sets the framework for the domestic season, from supporter travel plans to policing arrangements and broadcast preparation. The compiler's role, however, still appears to depend as much on judgement as on software.
Michael Herron, Head of Atos UK&I, said: "For millions of fans, the release of the Premier League fixture list is when a new season really comes to life. We're proud to support the Premier League and are looking forward to another exciting season ahead."
