Aggreko wins grid compliance in 11 European markets

Aggreko has secured grid code compliance for its 1.5MW generator fleet in 11 European countries, making it the only provider with this level of coverage in the region.

The certification covers the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Romania and Czechia. It allows the fleet to connect to public electricity networks and support projects including additional generation supply, demand spike management, power exports to the grid and grid balancing.

The move targets data centre projects facing power constraints in several European markets. As electricity demand rises and network infrastructure struggles to keep pace with new capacity requirements, operators have faced longer waits for grid connections.

Compliance means gas-fuelled systems above 50MW can be deployed within months rather than years, helping bridge supply gaps while permanent infrastructure is built.

That is significant for large data centre developments, where grid access can determine whether projects stay on schedule. Temporary or decentralised generation has become a more prominent option as developers and utilities look for ways to meet immediate demand without waiting for full network upgrades.

Wider coverage

Aggreko described the certification process as comprehensive testing across multiple national frameworks. Grid code rules vary by country and govern how generating assets connect to and interact with electricity networks, including technical and operational requirements for stability and response.

By meeting those standards in 11 countries, Aggreko can offer a single fleet across a broad European footprint instead of relying on separate compliance arrangements in each market. That expands its addressable market in sectors where large projects need short-notice or interim electricity supply.

Connor Docherty, Head of Product for Gas at Aggreko, said: "The challenges that European electricity networks are grappling with are well-documented. Decentralised energy will have a critical role to play during this period, which is where grid code compliance comes into play. With the ability to integrate with grid infrastructure, we can support grid operators and high energy users alike through decentralised energy generation. This will help to balance the grid, make up capacity shortfalls to ensure that large power projects can go ahead, assist increased renewable integration and avoid blackouts."

Aggreko noted that its work in grid-scale settings predates the latest certification, citing a project in Romania where it supplied 43MW of electricity to the national grid over four years while the local operator upgraded an ageing combined heat and power system.

According to Aggreko, that Romanian project also included grid balancing services and cut carbon emissions by 45%. The example supports the company's effort to position temporary generation not only as emergency supply, but also as a tool for network support during periods of transition.

Data centre demand

Across Europe, the data centre sector has become a focal point in debates over electricity access. New facilities require large, continuous power supplies, and developers have increasingly had to consider alternative energy arrangements where substations and transmission networks are nearing their limits.

In some markets, operators have delayed or redesigned projects because of limited local grid headroom. Backup and supplementary generation, once seen mainly as resilience measures, are now also being considered as part of broader power planning for major digital infrastructure sites.

Aggreko said its certified fleet can support projects by adding generation capacity, managing short-term surges in demand, exporting electricity back to networks and helping maintain system balance. Those functions are relevant not only to data centres, but also to grid operators managing volatility and changing demand patterns.

The fleet is also equipped with remote monitoring and control systems that provide diagnostics and site-level data. Such systems have become standard in temporary and distributed energy deployments, where operators need visibility over asset use, maintenance conditions and plant output.

For Aggreko, the announcement also reflects a broader commercial shift. Suppliers of temporary power have traditionally focused on industrial sites, events, utility support and emergency response, but demand from data centres is creating a newer market linked to digital infrastructure growth and delayed grid investment.

Docherty said the compliance milestone builds on that existing role in utility support. "We have long supported grid-scale applications across the continent, so achieving grid code compliance was the next logical step in our offering. Crucially, we don't just have the certification and the equipment, but the knowledge and expertise to back it up. This ensures that whatever challenges data centres are facing, we'll be able to deliver a specially engineered solution to meet their unique needs."
