ZYMIX has selected Mangopay as its payments partner for its UK super app launch. The deal covers e-money services for the ZYMIX wallet.

Under the arrangement, Mangopay will handle regulated money movement within the app, while ZYMIX controls the consumer-facing wallet and wider social platform. Mangopay U.K. is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011.

ZYMIX is targeting Gen Z users in the UK with an app that combines messaging, content, communities, events and payments in one service. Its initial focus is the university market, where it says students often switch between separate apps to chat with friends, book activities, arrange travel and settle shared costs.

The partnership reflects a broader push by consumer platforms to weave payments into social and commercial activity rather than treat them as a separate destination. In practice, users could discover an event, buy access, organise attendance with friends and split related costs without moving between different services.

Payments layer

ZYMIX wants payments to sit within the structure of the app rather than operate as an add-on. It says that model is central to reducing what it sees as a fragmented digital experience for younger consumers.

"Payments are becoming infrastructure rather than a destination. Consumers do not wake up wanting to use a payments application; they want to buy a ticket, organise a night out, split a taxi, pay a friend or participate in a community. The payment is simply one part of that wider activity.

The problem is that today those journeys are fragmented across multiple platforms. You discover something in one application, organise it somewhere else, pay through another service and then use yet another platform to settle the cost between friends.

A super app model gives us the opportunity to redesign that architecture around the consumer rather than around traditional technology categories. By integrating Mangopay at infrastructure level from launch, ZYMIX can make e-money services part of the experience rather than another destination the consumer has to navigate," said Nikita Sun, Chief Strategy and Corporate Affairs Officer at ZYMIX.

Mangopay provides wallet-based payments infrastructure for platforms that handle money flows between multiple parties. Its services include wallets, pay-ins, payouts, payment processing, foreign exchange and identity verification.

That setup is relevant for ZYMIX because the app is intended to connect consumers not only with friends, but also with event organisers, creators, communities and businesses. Embedding the e-money architecture early should help it support more than simple person-to-person transfers as its network expands.

University focus

The company's first visible test case is university life, where social plans often trigger a series of small transactions. A single evening out can involve buying a ticket, sharing a taxi, ordering food and repaying a friend who covered part of the cost.

ZYMIX says those interactions now tend to take place across separate apps for messaging, transport, ticketing and banking. It aims to bring those functions closer together through a wallet built into the same environment where users are already talking and organising plans.

"We believe the next generation of consumer technology will increasingly separate the financial infrastructure from the financial interface. The regulated movement and safeguarding of money remains highly specialised, but the place where consumers encounter that infrastructure is changing. Increasingly, the interface will be the platform where the consumer is already communicating, shopping, travelling, attending an event or spending time with friends.

That is particularly important for ZYMIX because we are not trying to build another application competing for another five minutes of somebody's day. We are building infrastructure intended to remove unnecessary movement between applications altogether," Sun said.

The deal also gives Mangopay another consumer platform customer in the UK as competition grows in embedded finance and digital wallet services. It already works with European platforms including Vinted, Mirakl, Wallapop, Chrono24 and Debenhams.

For Mangopay, the attraction lies in platforms where transactions involve several participants and where payments sit within a broader consumer journey. Those use cases tend to require systems that can receive, safeguard, split and transfer funds across different parties.

"The way consumers interact with digital platforms is changing rapidly. Content, communities, events and commerce are increasingly converging within the same experience, but behind that simplicity sits a much more complex movement of money between users, platforms and other participants. That is where wallet-based infrastructure becomes critical.

ZYMIX is building payments into the platform from the outset rather than treating them as something that sits alongside the consumer experience. Mangopay's role is to provide the regulated infrastructure underneath that experience, giving ZYMIX the flexibility to manage increasingly sophisticated payment flows as its ecosystem develops.

We are pleased to be supporting ZYMIX as it launches in the UK and to provide infrastructure that can grow with the platform," said Alex Taylor, Managing Director, UK, at Mangopay.
