UK workers seek greater role in shaping company strategy
Research conducted by monday.com has revealed that many UK employees seek more influence over strategic decisions in their workplaces, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) and economic conditions continue to drive change.
The survey, which included responses from over 520 UK workers, highlighted that 67% of employees desire a greater role in determining the direction of their companies. Many workers are open to AI integration, evidenced by 75% expressing a willingness to adopt AI tools. However, 88% of respondents emphasised the need for smarter strategies to effectively enhance such tools' use.
Ben Barnett, Regional Vice President for the UK and Ireland at monday.com, stated. "It's clear from the findings that UK employees are eager to take ownership of change. Rather than simply adapting to new developments, they want to play an active role in shaping them. AI, for all its potential, is only as good as the trust and transparency surrounding its use. Businesses that see AI as enhancing rather than replacing human potential will be best positioned for success."
Employees also strongly support preserving the meaningful aspects of their work. For example, 38% are concerned that AI could replace tasks they enjoy. Moreover, 29% of survey participants worry that AI could endanger their jobs entirely. In addition to these apprehensions, 50% of UK workers called for increased company transparency regarding the reasons for changes in work processes and structures.
The findings show that most UK employees appreciate clear communication and goal-setting from their leadership. According to the survey, 92% of UK employees understand how their performance is assessed, and 89% know their company's overarching goals. Furthermore, 86% report being motivated to succeed personally, and 79% are driven to contribute to their company's success.
Despite a general understanding of company objectives and personal evaluation, employees seek more involvement in their organisation's broader vision. For example, 72% desire greater ownership within their companies, and 67% want more control over strategic company decisions.
Many employees are also contemplating skills development and career progression opportunities in the coming year. According to the survey, 40% of workers aim to enhance their leadership abilities, 32% intend to improve project management skills, and 26% wish to bolster their creativity and innovation skills.
As businesses in the UK navigate changes such as economic shifts and the introduction of AI tools, employees have expressed the need for improved communication and training. About 53% of employees advocate for broader communication regarding workplace changes, while 52% highlight the necessity for better training to manage these changes effectively.
75% of UK employees view the integration of AI features positively, with pre-existing tools receiving notable approval. Among AI users, 90% reported reduced time spent on manual tasks, 81% noted improved efficiency in tackling difficult tasks, and 81% felt that AI boosted their creativity.
Nonetheless, AI's capabilities still need improvement. Approximately 33% of employees have noted the need for enhancements in AI's automation capabilities, including task routines and security. A similar percentage feels there is scope for improvements in areas like resource and project management and software and programming development.
Ben Barnett added, "The UK's dynamic business environment positions its companies to set a global benchmark for managing change. Those that bring employees into decision-making and align innovation with workforce needs will lead the way. By evolving with their people, not apart from them, organisations will shape a more sustainable and resilient future of work."
