Spinnaker launches PostgreSQL support & migration services

Spinnaker Support has launched PostgreSQL support and migration services for organisations seeking to reduce reliance on Oracle databases, expanding its database modernisation work into PostgreSQL.

The new offering includes enterprise software support for PostgreSQL and assessment and migration services delivered with HexaCluster. It is designed to help customers maintain existing Oracle estates while moving selected workloads to PostgreSQL in stages.

Spinnaker is also developing an enterprise distribution for PostgreSQL, although it is not yet generally available. The planned distribution will be built around standard PostgreSQL and open-source components rather than proprietary forks or closed compatibility layers.

Spinnaker's software support service covers standard PostgreSQL and selected open-source components across on-premises, virtualised, containerised and cloud environments. It includes break-fix support, troubleshooting, security guidance, performance and configuration support, and lifecycle guidance.

The migration service targets organisations assessing whether Oracle workloads are suitable for PostgreSQL. It analyses Oracle database dependencies, automates parts of the conversion work where appropriate, validates production readiness, and supports controlled cutovers with rollback planning.

HexaCluster provides the migration technology through its HexaRocket platform, which handles migration, data movement and replication. The partnership is intended to reduce the operational risk of Oracle-to-PostgreSQL transitions.

The launch comes as many large organisations review database spending and support arrangements tied to proprietary platforms. Spinnaker cited the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, which found that 55.6% of developers reported using Postgres, the highest share among databases covered in the survey.

Broader shift

Spinnaker presents the new offerings as part of a broader strategy to support customers through both legacy operations and modernisation programmes. It already provides third-party support and related services across Oracle, SAP, JD Edwards and VMware environments.

The PostgreSQL push is not only about moving workloads off Oracle. It also extends Spinnaker's role in long-term enterprise infrastructure decisions. By supporting both the source environment and the target platform, the company is aiming to play a larger part in customer database planning and operations.

In practice, many large database migrations are gradual rather than wholesale. Businesses often keep critical systems on Oracle while moving less complex or lower-risk workloads first, particularly where application dependencies, performance demands and compliance requirements vary across estates.

Spinnaker says its PostgreSQL services are designed around that workload-by-workload model, allowing customers to modernise selected workloads without disrupting systems that remain dependent on Oracle.

Matt Stava, Chief Executive Officer, Spinnaker Support, outlined the company's view of the market shift. "Organisations want greater flexibility as they modernize their database environments, but they should not have to sacrifice enterprise-grade assurance or trade one proprietary dependency for another," said Stava.

"Our new PostgreSQL offerings give customers a trusted, lower-risk path to standard, non-proprietary PostgreSQL, backed by 24×7 mission-critical support, security guidance, and deep technical expertise. This is an important step in expanding the Spinnaker OpenPath framework and strengthens our ability to support customers across their existing technology environments, modernization initiatives, and emerging AI workloads," he said.

Leadership change

Alongside the launch, Spinnaker promoted Martin Biggs to Vice President and General Manager, PostgreSQL Practise. He will oversee the teams responsible for PostgreSQL support, migration services, and development of the company's planned PostgreSQL distribution.

The appointment suggests Spinnaker expects PostgreSQL to become a distinct operating unit rather than a narrow service extension. It also gives the company a dedicated executive lead in a market where demand is increasingly tied to cost control, vendor concentration and the adoption of open-source software in core systems.

Biggs said customer discussions had shown sustained interest in PostgreSQL, especially among large Oracle users. "In conversations with some of the world's largest and most complex Oracle database users, we continue to hear the same thing: organizations want the freedom, control, and modernization potential of Postgres, but they need a partner that can help them move responsibly," he said.

"What makes Spinnaker different is that we can support the Oracle database environment customers run today, help define the right path forward, and support the PostgreSQL destination without forcing a premature decision or a new form of lock-in," he said.

The PostgreSQL products sit within Spinnaker's Run, Optimize, Transform structure, which it applies across its other technology practices. The framework is intended to help customers manage current systems, improve operations and plan longer-term changes without committing all workloads to a single transition path at once.
