Oracle & AWS launch Exadata on Exascale infrastructure

Oracle and Amazon Web Services have expanded their long-term collaboration around Oracle AI Database@AWS and launched Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exascale Infrastructure on the platform. The service is now available in 22 AWS Regions.

The move adds a new option for companies running Oracle databases in AWS as both aim to bring more large workloads onto the joint offering. Oracle said the Exascale service is now generally available and is designed to let customers use Exadata without deploying dedicated database and storage servers.

Under the revised agreement, Oracle and AWS will continue investing in Oracle AI Database@AWS, with a focus on customer migration and adoption. The companies are positioning the arrangement as a way for businesses to move established Oracle database estates into AWS environments while retaining access to AWS analytics and AI services.

New service

The new Exadata service lets customers choose the compute and storage they need while spreading each database across pooled storage servers. Oracle said this removes the need to provision dedicated infrastructure and makes the service practical for a wider range of workloads, including smaller databases and multi-region deployments for resilience and recovery.

It also includes thin cloning, which allows database copies for development and testing without duplicating storage. Oracle said the approach is intended to lower the cost of running Exadata-based environments for more organisations.

The broader joint service combines Oracle database technology with AWS infrastructure and related tools. Customers can connect database workloads with AWS products including Amazon Bedrock, Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Redshift, Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon S3 and Amazon EventBridge, according to Oracle.

Over the past year, the companies have also added Oracle Autonomous AI Database Serverless, support for Platinum Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture and what they described as sub-200-microsecond application-to-database latency for some deployments using AWS High Performance Networking. Oracle said round-trip latency can be as low as 165 microseconds under updated deployment guidance.

Customer uptake

Oracle and AWS pointed to customer use in retail, music and transport as evidence of demand for the service. The companies said CJ Olive Young, Kobalt Music Group and the Metropolitan Transport Authority of Barcelona are using Oracle AI Database@AWS for key workloads.

"Just one year after general availability, Oracle AI Database@AWS has reached global scale, with customers running business-critical workloads, and 22 AWS Regions available across Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Americas," said Nathan Thomas, Senior Vice President, Product Management, Oracle.

"This momentum demonstrates that enterprises want a simpler, lower-cost path to modernize their most important Oracle workloads within AWS environments. With the global reach and innovative new services we have made available over the last year, we are delivering that path and enabling more and more customers to put AI to work on live business data and build new applications without re-architecting or compromising performance," said Thomas.

AWS said the service is aimed at customers that want to keep Oracle data close to AWS tools already used by their application and analytics teams.

"The enterprise adoption over the past year reflects the value customers get when their Oracle AI Database workloads run on Oracle AI Database@AWS," said Ganapathy (G2) Krishnamoorthy, Vice President, Database Services, AWS.

"With the full breadth of AWS analytics and AI services, available right where their data lives, customers of any size can modernize applications faster, unlock new insights, and build AI-powered applications on the data that runs their business," said Krishnamoorthy.

Named users

CJ Olive Young, a South Korean beauty and wellness retailer with more than 1,380 stores, is using the platform to move core workloads to the cloud. The retailer said local availability in South Korea is a factor in that work.

"The availability of Oracle AI Database@AWS in South Korea offers an easy migration path to the cloud for our mission-critical Oracle workloads," said Wonho Park, Platform Engineering Team Lead, CJ Olive Young.

"We expect the seamless integration with AWS's advanced AI and analytics services, such as Amazon Bedrock, to accelerate our AI innovation, reduce time-to-insight, and deliver measurable business outcomes," said Park.

Kobalt Music Group is using Oracle AI Database@AWS to support a platform that processes music consumption data and distributes royalties. The company said it uses Oracle Exadata Database Service on Dedicated Infrastructure in AWS for low-latency links with its AWS applications.

"Technology plays a critical role in the management of complex digital music rights, ensuring fast and accurate payments, while delivering greater transparency and value to creators," said Nuno Guerreiro, Chief Technology Officer, Kobalt Music Group.

"With Oracle AI Database@AWS, we can continue evolving our digital platform on a high-performance foundation that supports our growth and enables us to empower our clients with greater speed and efficiency," said Guerreiro.

Barcelona's Metropolitan Transport Authority said it is using the service to support transport network operations.

"Oracle AI Database@AWS helps us deliver new and improved mobility services while enhancing our operational efficiency," said Manuel Valdés, General Manager, Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) of Barcelona.

"By putting critical mobility data, advanced analytics, and AI to better use, we can make smarter decisions and continually improve the public transportation services people across the Barcelona metropolitan region rely on every day," said Valdés.

Oracle also said consulting and services groups including Deloitte and Hitachi are supporting adoption of Oracle AI Database@AWS through migration work, managed services and broader transformation projects.

Oracle AI Database@AWS is now live in 22 AWS Regions across Asia Pacific, Europe and the Americas.
