Leicester hospitals launch integrated patient admin system upgrade

Tue, 18th Nov 2025

University Hospitals of Leicester has deployed a new Patient Administration System (PAS), replacing a system that had been in operation for 35 years. Provided by Nervecentre Software and implemented by NTT DATA with support from Dell Technologies, the new PAS fully integrates with the trust's electronic patient record (EPR).

System integration

The upgraded PAS links referrals, admissions, bed management, clinic bookings, and discharge processes. Integration with the EPR allows healthcare professionals to view a comprehensive record of each patient's journey, supporting more informed decision-making at the point of care.

More than 50 million patient records were migrated to the new system without data loss or disruption to data reporting. Over 18,000 NHS staff working across three acute hospitals and community sites can now access and update patient information in real time.

Staff efficiency

The new PAS is expected to save staff time by streamlining information gathering and reducing administrative tasks. Enhanced data capture and management capabilities aim to reduce error rates and contribute to shorter waiting times for patients. A forthcoming patient portal will provide individuals with better visibility into appointments and treatment progress, with planned integration into the NHS App.

Technology deployment

NTT DATA collaborated with the UHL Digital and Data team to oversee system testing, develop reporting functionality, manage user access, and implement infrastructure upgrades. The implementation included refreshing hardware in clinical areas and providing embedded support teams for hands-on assistance during rollout. A 24/7 help desk was established to address staff issues promptly during the early stages of deployment.

Leadership commentary

"Our existing Patient Administration System just wasn't fit for a complex, modern hospital organisation. We've worked with Nervecentre to develop this system from the ground up, and this is the first time it's been used anywhere in the world. It was designed in partnership with the NHS, for the NHS, and our partnership with NTT DATA and Nervecentre has made it a huge success." said Will Monaghan, Group Chief Digital Information Officer, University Hospitals of Leicester and University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.

"For us, this is a step on the journey. We're now really excited about how we can integrate AI into how we deliver and administer clinical care. Our constant focus is on making it easier to provide care, and safer to receive it," said Monaghan.

"This was one of the most ambitious and critical system transformations we've delivered in the NHS. Our priorities were continuity of patient care and minimising any disruption to staff across the trust. We're proud to have brought the scale, experience and expertise needed to make this transition seamless for UHL's patients and staff," said Flann Horgan, Head of Healthcare Sector, NTT DATA UK&I.
