GitLab unveils self-hosted AI option for secure data control
GitLab has announced the general availability of GitLab Duo Self-Hosted, a capability designed for organisations aiming to maintain strict control over data privacy and security.
GitLab Duo Self-Hosted enables organisations with stringent regulatory and privacy requirements to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities within their local infrastructure. This eliminates the need for cloud connectivity, allowing for complete control over data residency and ensuring infrastructure isolation.
Organisations are provided with the flexibility to choose from a list of supported AI models, such as Anthropic, Mistral, and OpenAI. This enables them to optimise operational efficiency while adhering to compliance and data privacy standards within a unified DevSecOps platform. This initiative is particularly beneficial for those seeking to keep pace with AI advancements without compromising security and governance.
The features of GitLab Duo Self-Hosted include flexible model deployments, which allow users to enhance performance by selecting suitable AI models. Additional features like GitLab Duo Code Suggestions facilitate code generation and completion, aiding users in completing lines of code automatically. GitLab Duo Chat integrates all AI capabilities into a natural language chat interface to streamline DevSecOps workflows.
Rachel Stephens, Research Director at RedMonk, supported the introduction of this capability. "Enterprises want to harness the power of AI and keep pace with this fast-moving technology while also minimising their security and governance risks," she stated.
"GitLab Duo Self-Hosted gives companies the ability to deploy LLMs within their own infrastructure, helping ensure data sovereignty and regulatory compliance. These additional guardrails are designed to help enterprises embrace AI-driven development and software delivery."
Chief Product Officer at GitLab, David DeSanto, highlighted the unique offering of GitLab Duo Self-Hosted for organisations with demanding security and data privacy needs.
"GitLab Duo Self-Hosted is transformative for organisations with strict security and data privacy requirements," he said. "GitLab is the only DevSecOps platform to offer a self-hosted AI capability, while also eliminating the need for organisations to stitch together multiple-point solutions across the software development lifecycle. Customers can now confidently adopt AI in air-gapped and private cloud environments, accelerating innovation while maintaining complete control over their data."
GitLab Duo is described as a suite of comprehensive AI capabilities that support DevSecOps teams at every phase of software development. The self-hosted version is particularly accessible to GitLab Self-Managed, Ultimate customers with the appropriate licensing options.
