FormationQ & Hartree Centre partner on quantum adoption

FormationQ and the Hartree Centre have formed a strategic partnership to support quantum computing adoption across industry, government and research in the UK.

The collaboration will examine how quantum computing, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and hybrid computing can be applied to complex problems in healthcare, life sciences, manufacturing, logistics, energy, infrastructure and the public sector.

The agreement brings together a specialist in quantum adoption programmes and a public research centre that works with businesses and government bodies on digital technologies. The Hartree Centre is part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, which sits within UK Research and Innovation.

The partnership comes as quantum computing attracts growing interest from companies and public institutions looking for practical uses beyond laboratory research. Many organisations have tested pilot projects and proof-of-concept work, but still face obstacles in turning those efforts into operational systems.

Those barriers include shortages of specialist skills, the challenge of integrating emerging tools with existing technology estates, and the need for ways to test and validate systems before wider deployment. The partnership will cover the path from identifying relevant use cases to pilot development and longer-term deployment.

The move also reflects a broader UK push to strengthen domestic expertise in advanced computing. Plans include working with universities, researchers, students and industry partners to build skills and deepen the wider ecosystem around quantum and related technologies.

Skills gap

The announcement highlights a concern that has become common across the sector: a lack of quantum-ready talent. The organisations cited survey findings showing that more than 40% of respondents identified a shortage of skilled workers as an organisational challenge in adopting quantum computing.

For the Hartree Centre, the partnership extends its work helping organisations assess and adopt technologies including supercomputing, data science, cloud, quantum and AI. Its role has focused on translating research expertise into projects that companies and public bodies can use in operational settings.

FormationQ, for its part, has positioned itself around the structures needed to move quantum technologies into wider use. Its work includes programme support for talent development, application formation and coordination between institutions.

Kate Royse outlined the Hartree Centre's view of the partnership in a statement accompanying the announcement.

Commercial shift

The tie-up reflects a stage in the quantum market where commercial and public sector interest is shifting from general exploration to identifying narrower, high-value applications. In that environment, organisations are increasingly looking for partners that can help them determine where quantum methods may offer an advantage and where conventional or hybrid approaches remain more appropriate.

Hybrid computing is central to that discussion because many real-world deployments are expected to combine different forms of computing rather than rely on quantum systems alone. The partnership will explore how these combinations could be applied to practical sector problems, particularly in data-heavy and optimisation tasks.

There is also an institutional dimension. By linking a private company focused on adoption with a government-backed research centre, the arrangement underlines how the UK's quantum agenda is being shaped by cooperation between business, academia and the public sector rather than by technology developers alone.

The work may also extend to international collaboration involving governments, research bodies and industry partners. That part of the partnership is intended to examine how governance structures, technical expertise and working relationships can support the responsible use of advanced computing technologies in the UK and elsewhere.

FormationQ has been building a network of institutional relationships in adjacent areas, including work with the University of Cambridge, The King's Foundation and The Jane Goodall Institute. The latest agreement adds a research and innovation partner with a direct role in the UK's public technology landscape.
