Fastly introduces bot management updates for web security

Fri, 28th Mar 2025

Fastly has unveiled new updates to its Bot Management service designed to enhance online security while minimizing disruptions to users.

The new features aim to address issues faced by organisations using traditional security measures that often lead to frustrating user experiences, such as CAPTCHAs. Fastly's enhancements include Dynamic Challenges, Advanced Client-Side Detection, and Compromised Credential Checking, providing a more seamless experience for legitimate users while still targeting bots effectively.

Dynamic Challenges employ real-time analysis to assess incoming web traffic. Legitimate users can access content with minimal interaction, while suspected bots face more rigorous challenges. Kip Compton, Chief Product Officer at Fastly, commented, "Security teams shouldn't have to choose between blocking malicious bots and frustrating customers. This update allows users to move freely while bad actors get stopped in their tracks."

Another update, Advanced Client-Side Detection, involves a straightforward JavaScript line enabling companies to detect bots that mimic real-user behavior. This proactive approach identifies and blocks sophisticated bots that employ headless browsers and automation tools. The simplicity and efficiency of this system look to provide protection without impacting the overall performance of websites.

Compromised Credential Checking presents a new layer of security by addressing account takeover threats. This feature checks login attempts against known databases of compromised credentials, allowing businesses to respond promptly to unauthorized access attempts. This automatic scanning offers security without adding barriers for genuine users.

Emphasizing the importance of these developments, Compton stated, "By fast-tracking legitimate users and deploying interactive challenges only when necessary, Fastly significantly reduces reliance on CAPTCHAs, improving user experience and boosting conversion rates."

Industry expert Christopher Rodriguez, Research Director at IDC, highlighted the dilemma faced by businesses in balancing security and user experience. "As bots continue to become more sophisticated, organisations find themselves stuck between providing enhanced security or an enhanced end-user experience. The latest updates, alongside Fastly's developer-focused approach, enable companies to detect and respond to bots while providing end-users with an optimal experience," he remarked.

These updates are accessible to all current Fastly customers, indicating the company's commitment to evolving its security offerings in response to growing cyber threats.
