Dr John Flackett awarded honorary doctorate for AI impact

Dr John Flackett has been recognised with an honorary Doctor of Science by Southampton Solent University in acknowledgement of his 30-year career in artificial intelligence.

The distinction was conferred as part of the university's graduation ceremonies, celebrating Flackett's long-standing contributions to the field of artificial intelligence, particularly in the context of research, training, and education.

Longstanding career

Dr Flackett is the Co-founder and Head of AI Lab (Artificial Intelligence Labouratory), an organisation known for its AI-focused training, research, and consulting work for businesses and institutions internationally, including the United Kingdom and Australia. Throughout his career, he has supported companies in becoming equipped to integrate AI technologies, thereby shaping approaches to automation and data-driven decision-making within multiple industries.

Having earned a PhD in artificial intelligence in 2005, he has taught undergraduate and master's level courses in AI and software engineering at the university over a ten-year period. In 1996, he became the first person to receive a first-class honours degree on the university's BSc Computer Studies course.

Flackett served as AI Specialist in Residence at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand and developed software solutions for several major corporations during his career. This combination of academic and practical experience has positioned him as a trusted voice in both the educational and business sectors regarding the advancement and implementation of AI.
