AI survey reveals growing distrust in tech giants, call for regulation
A survey of experts, marketers, and influencers working in artificial intelligence (AI), conducted by CommsCo PR, has unveiled attitudes towards AI and major technology companies.
The findings indicate a growing distrust in tech giants and a clear demand for stricter regulatory measures. The survey also reveals mixed expectations regarding the transformative potential of AI over the next five years.
The survey, which reflects the opinions of 100 technology professionals and enthusiasts, was conducted at AI author Andrew Burgess's recent book launch, hosted by TechUK in conjunction with CommsCo PR, TechMarketView, and Espire Infolabs.
Results show that a significant majority (70%) of respondents use large language models (LLMs) both personally and professionally, highlighting AI's profound integration into daily life and its growing role in the workplace. Among the respondents, 27% reported using LLMs exclusively for professional purposes, while only 3% use them solely for personal reasons.
Despite the widespread adoption of AI, there is a cautious outlook regarding its future impact. Nearly half (49%) of those surveyed believe that significant changes driven by AI will take more than five years to materialise, with only 15% expecting transformative effects within the next year. This cautious optimism reflects a prevailing sentiment that while AI is already delivering benefits, its full transformative impact remains some time away.
Regarding the advantages and disadvantages of AI, 76% of respondents view AI as a net positive, demonstrating strong confidence in its potential benefits. However, this optimism is tempered by a notable lack of trust towards big technology companies. An overwhelming 79% of participants express distrust in these giants, citing concerns about transparency and ethical practices.
The call for more regulation is clear, with 76% of respondents advocating for more stringent regulations to govern AI and its development. This substantial support for increased oversight signals a demand for robust frameworks to address ethical concerns and ensure accountability within the tech industry.
AI strategist and advisor Andrew Burgess commented on the findings, stating, "The survey results paint a clear picture of the current landscape: while AI is embraced for its potential benefits, there is a palpable mistrust of big tech companies and a strong call for enhanced regulation. These insights should serve as a wake-up call for policymakers and industry leaders to address these concerns and foster a more transparent and accountable technological environment."
Burgess continued, "My advice is that forward-thinking enterprises should be embracing AI, looking to exploit its benefits across their organisation, while cautiously considering and managing the potential ethical challenges."
The event also marked the launch of The AI Innovators Collective, a community aimed at offering support, insights, and guidance to its members on the latest innovations in AI.
