Students meet Valkyries at NSSLGlobal in inspirational event
Students from Royal Alexandra & Albert School recently visited NSSLGlobal's headquarters in Redhill to engage with The Valkyries, the first all-female Royal Navy team to complete a 3,000-mile transatlantic rowing challenge.
During the visit, the students were given the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from the team known as The Valkyries, about their experience of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. They described the challenge of navigating through relentless waves and the physical demands of rowing in two-hour shifts in a small boat equipped with minimal facilities.
NSSLGlobal, which is a long-time supporter of Royal Navy events, provided The Valkyries with satellite communications throughout their journey, enabling them to remain connected with organisers and loved ones. Neil Fraser, Director for Defence and Space at NSSLGlobal, highlighted the importance of these communications in ensuring the team's safety and success.
In attendance at this community event was Councillor Eddy Humphreys, the Mayor of the Borough of Reigate & Banstead, who expressed his admiration for the team's relentless determination. "I was inspired by the relentless determination of the Valkyries. We are reminded that the greatest journeys, whether across the ocean or in business, are conquered stroke by stroke, with resilience, teamwork, and focus," the Mayor stated.
Lieutenant Commander Ali Aindow, who led the team alongside Lieutenant Commander Nic Hall, Petty Officer Aaby Aldridge, and Lieutenant Commander Izzy Rawlinson, recounted the gruelling task of maintaining their rowing regime over 46 days. They pushed their physical and mental endurance to the limit, ending their journey in Antigua.
Lieutenant Commander Hugo Mitchell-Heggs, who initiated the HMS Oardacious crossings, underscored the critical role of sponsors like NSSLGlobal. He said, "We are so grateful to NSSLGlobal who have supported us through every single one of our four HMS Oardacious Atlantic Crossings; providing critical and welfare communications that have ensured the safety and success of each crossing. The team have shown us that sponsorship is so much more than advertising, it is a very special collaboration that allows us to deliver our impact."
Beyond inspiring tales of rowing, students also participated in interactive sessions about satellite communications and STEM careers. These sessions were facilitated by NSSLGlobal's employees, including recent graduates and apprentices, providing insights into the technology sector.
Polly Neath, Director of the Technology Faculty at the Royal Alexandra and Albert School, noted the value of the day, stating, "NSSLGlobal hosted a fantastic day for our school, enabling students to meet the Valkyries and the Mayor. The sessions were engaging as they were interactive, and we all got the opportunity handle the technology and ask questions directly to people working in the satcoms industry. Both the students and staff had a fantastic experience, and we truly appreciate the effort NSSLGlobal put into making it such a memorable visit. I hope we have the opportunity to do it again next year!"
NSSLGlobal continues to support a variety of Royal Navy challenges and other expeditions, reflecting its commitment not only to technology advancements but also to fostering interest in STEM careers among young people. This event highlighted the intersection of adventure, technology, and career inspiration, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
