Phoenix Software named fourth on UK Best Workplaces list

Fri, 13th Mar 2026

Phoenix Software has ranked fourth in the large company category of Great Place to Work UK's Best Workplaces 2026 list, placing the York-based IT services firm among the country's highest-rated employers under the programme's annual assessment.

The Best Workplaces list is based on employee survey responses and an evaluation model that measures workplace trust, pride and camaraderie. It also assesses how closely day-to-day staff experience matches an organisation's stated values and culture. Companies must score highly against these benchmarks to make the final list.

Phoenix said the result reflects its continued focus on workplace culture and employee experience, pointing to work over the past year on professional development, wellbeing and inclusivity.

Great Place to Work UK positions its awards as an independent indicator of workplace culture, with confidential employee feedback at the core. The assessment also considers leadership and innovation, alongside staff views on fairness, support and recognition.

Employee focus

Phoenix described its culture as values-led and collaborative. Staff initiatives include opportunities to develop skills and a working environment that encourages learning and knowledge sharing.

The company operates in the UK technology and IT services market, where competition for skilled staff remains intense. Employer branding and retention have become strategic priorities for many mid-sized and large firms in the sector, particularly where project delivery depends on specialist technical experience and long-running customer relationships.

Phoenix framed the ranking as recognition of internal collaboration and staff commitment. "Being named on the UK's Best Workplaces list is something we are incredibly proud of. Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and this recognition reflects the commitment, passion, and collaboration shown across the business every day," said Clare Metcalfe, managing director.

Metcalfe linked employee experience with wider organisational performance. "At Phoenix, we believe that when our people thrive, the organisation thrives. We remain committed to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired to do their best work," she said.

Award criteria

Great Place to Work's model is designed to compare organisations against a consistent set of measures, regardless of sector. The programme uses benchmarking to test whether an organisation delivers an experience consistent with its culture claims, based on workforce feedback.

The ranking is also intended to encourage employers to invest in workplace practices that improve staff experience. Great Place to Work highlighted the link it draws between people practices and business outcomes.

"At Great Place To Work, our mission is to help every workplace become a great place to work for all. We wholeheartedly endorse that what's 'better for business' aligns with what's 'better for people,' ultimately contributing to a better world for all," said Benedict Gautrey, managing director of Great Place To Work UK.

Culture messaging

Alongside the ranking, Phoenix has produced a short culture video featuring employees discussing workplace support, team collaboration and learning. The film is intended as a window into daily working life and how staff interact across teams.

Phoenix said the award adds to a wider set of Great Place to Work-related milestones. While it did not provide a full list in its announcement, it said it will continue investing in initiatives linked to employee development and inclusion as it builds on the latest recognition.
