Object First announces 192TB upgrade for backup storage solution

Tue, 4th Jun 2024

Object First, a vendor of ransomware-proof backup storage appliances designed for Veeam, has unveiled a substantial upgrade to its storage capacity options. The increase in capacity is up to 192TB per node for its Ootbi (Out-of-the-Box Immutability) appliance, boasting a maximum of 768TB per cluster. This development marks a significant step in addressing the growing demands for secure and scalable data storage solutions.

The expanded storage capacities will enable users to manage data backups more efficiently and securely, without compromising on performance. Presently, the 192TB version joins the existing 64TB and 128TB Ootbi appliances. The 1.5 version of Ootbi is available immediately, with the general availability of the 192TB appliance expected worldwide in August 2024.

Eric Schott, Chief Product Officer at Object First, highlighted the importance of this upgrade, emphasising its enhanced security and scalability. Support for more immutable storage capacities allows customers to expand with the demands of modern environments while protecting their data from threats like ransomware," Schott stated.

The new version integrates seamlessly with Veeam's 12.1.2 release, facilitating backup storage capacities exceeding 3 petabytes as part of a Veeam backup repository, allowing Ootbi clusters to serve as multiple extents in a Veeam scale-out backup repository (SOBR). This synergy between Object First and Veeam underscores the emphasis on robust data security and performance.

As digital data volumes continue to grow, both in the private and commercial sectors, the need for large-scale, secure backup storage solutions is paramount. Object First's advancements cater to the escalating demands for flexible and secure backup solutions, ensuring ransomware resilience through advanced tamper-proofing and security hardening measures. The Ootbi 1.5 release includes continuous third-party security testing and validation, along with additional support for network time security (NTS) time service options and named administrators.

David Bennett, CEO of Object First, remarked on the significance of the 192TB appliance. "The 192TB appliance and the 1.5 release further our mission to provide secure, simple, and powerful on-premises backup storage tailored for Veeam customers. We offer three different capacities without compromising performance or security, ensuring the best storage solutions for Veeam users."

Industry expert Johnny Yu, research manager at IDC, also weighed in on the necessity of immutable backup storage. "IDC research found that cybercriminals attempted to destroy backup and recovery capabilities in nearly half of all instances. Ootbi's validated security measures and 'no delete button' directly counteract such threats, bolstering cyber resilience."
