IWD 2025: The AI-Ready generation: Transforming learning, teaching & future careers

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and redefining job markets, equipping the next generation with the necessary digital skills is of huge importance.

The rapid technological advancements of the past decade have made it increasingly clear that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is no longer optional but essential for future success.

Despite the growing demand for digital literacy, however, a significant skills gap persists, particularly among young learners. Addressing this gap requires innovative educational approaches that not only make learning engaging but also foster inclusivity and diversity.

As a computer scientist and educator, I have witnessed first-hand how technology can transform learning the experience. I am a strong advocate for the integration of AI and STEM-based courses as the fundamental levels to equip children with essential skills and prepare them for the future. Collaborations with schools can actually be a good way to bring about the changes. At the British Youth International College (BYITC), we have embraced AI and gamification to make STEM education more accessible and enjoyable for children.

Our pioneering games-based learning model has helped thousands of students grasp complex mathematical and coding concepts effortlessly. By integrating interactive learning tools and AI-driven platforms, we are not just teaching children how to code but also cultivating problem-solving, logical reasoning, and critical thinking skills, all essential attributes in an AI-driven world.

Educators and policymakers need to recognise the importance of adaptive learning technologies. AI-powered platforms can personalise learning experiences based on individual student progress, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.

This targeted approach ensures that no child is left behind, irrespective of their starting point. By leveraging AI in education, we can create a more dynamic and effective learning environment that prepares children for the future workforce.

One of the most encouraging trends we have seen at BYITC is the increasing participation of girls in STEM learning. Traditionally, STEM fields have been male dominated, but recent years have seen a promising shift, with more young girls showing interest in coding, robotics, and mathematics. Gaming-based learning has played a crucial role in this transformation.

As educators, we must continue to support initiatives that encourage girls to explore technology fields, ensuring equal opportunities for all.

Research backs the link between gaming and increased STEM engagement among girls. Studies have shown that girls who actively engage in computer gaming are more likely to pursue STEM degrees and achieve higher academic performance in these subjects.

So by integrating game-based learning methods into mainstream education, we can further close the gender gap and create a more diverse and inclusive tech industry.

The digital revolution has redefined education, extending learning beyond traditional classroom settings. Online learning platforms have become invaluable tools in providing flexible, engaging, and personalised education. At BYITC, we have leveraged digital innovations to create immersive learning experiences that keep students motivated and curious.

Our abacus-based maths program, for example, uses interactive game elements to enhance numerical proficiency in children. Similarly, courses like Penguin Party Maths and Number Nitro transform complex mathematical concepts into enjoyable challenges, making learning feel like play.

On top of this, the launch of a AI-generated teaching assistant last year has proven very popular amongst students. It was important to make it a talking avatar of a young woman, named Olivia, in classroom and school settings who interacts with young learners and answers their questions.

Such initiatives demonstrate that technology, when used effectively, can revolutionise education and inspire young minds.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, it is essential to acknowledge the role of technology in bridging educational gaps and fostering gender inclusivity. The growing presence of girls in STEM and the increasing accessibility of digital learning tools signify a bright future for the next generation.

By investing in AI-driven and game-based learning approaches, we can ensure that all children, regardless of gender or background, are equipped with the skills they need to thrive in the 21st Century.
