IT professionals in Europe wary of AI misinformation risks

Tue, 13th Aug 2024

A recent ISACA survey revealed that European IT professionals are anticipating significant changes to their roles due to the influence of artificial intelligence (AI), but they remain apprehensive about their ability to detect AI misinformation.

The findings from ISACA's AI Pulse Poll indicate that most IT professionals recognise AI's potential benefits but also express concern about their preparedness to manage the associated challenges. Chris Dimitriadis, Chief Global Strategy Officer at ISACA, highlighted the importance of adapting to the evolving landscape. "As AI continues to change many professions in fields across IT, from cybersecurity to risk and privacy, it's crucial that we respond to the changing landscape and understand AI's applications and implications."

"To both expand their professional knowledge and futureproof their careers, IT and digital trust professionals at all career stages should explore the range of tools at their disposal to stay informed and relevant when it comes to emerging technologies like AI," he said.

According to the poll, 62% of respondents believe AI will positively impact audit and assurance in the coming year, a sentiment higher than in areas such as risk, compliance, security, IT strategy and governance, and privacy. Despite these optimistic views, there are concerns about AI's negative effects on other domains, notably privacy and security. Specifically, 38% predict a negative impact on privacy, and 28% foresee drawbacks for security.

Confidence in detecting AI-powered misinformation is notably lacking, with 19% of participants admitting they are not confident in their abilities. The uncertainty extends to organisational capabilities, with 20% expressing doubts about their companies' preparedness. This lack of confidence underscores the pressing need for training and education to keep pace with AI's rapid development.

ISACA has responded to this demand by launching a suite of new AI training courses aimed at helping IT professionals bolster their skills. The introductory course, "Introduction to AI for Auditors," is designed to equip auditors with essential AI concepts, tools, techniques, and ethical considerations. Other courses include "Ethical Perspectives in AI: Implications, Principles, and Social Dynamic," which addresses the ethical impacts of AI, and "Machine Learning for Business Enablement," which focuses on evaluating machine learning solutions and supporting responsible adoption.

The survey also highlights a strategic shift within organisations, with 25% considering increasing AI-related positions. A significant 86% of respondents acknowledge the necessity for AI training within the next two years to either retain their current roles or advance their careers. This reflects a broader trend of prioritising education to navigate the uncertainties brought about by AI.

In support of these efforts, ISACA has also introduced additional AI-focused resources. These include the "Artificial Intelligence: A Primer on Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Neural Networks" and the "Artificial Intelligence Audit Toolkit." An AI acceptable use policy template and other guidance documents are available to help organisations implement AI responsibly and ethically.

This comprehensive approach aims to provide IT professionals with a deeper understanding of AI and its implications, enabling them to harness the technology effectively while mitigating its risks. The results from ISACA's poll suggest a clear path: ongoing education and training will be critical to ensuring that professionals can adapt to AI's transformative influence on the industry.
