HiQi & Ecommpay boost app payments in Portugal & Spain

Thu, 17th Apr 2025

Portuguese fuel payment app HiQi has partnered with payments platform Ecommpay to allow customers in Portugal and Spain to top up their accounts using a wider range of payment methods, including account-to-account transfers and faster payment options.

The HiQi app enables private and business motorists to refuel and pay directly from their devices, eliminating the need for cash or standing in queues at petrol stations. The app also features exclusive user discounts, providing access to preferential fuel prices.

Through its collaboration with Ecommpay, HiQi now complies with the European Union's instant payments regulations, offering more secure and compliant payment processing. Thanks to Ecommpay, drivers can now add credit to their accounts more efficiently by choosing their preferred payment methods.

Salvador Lourenço, IT Manager at HiQi, said, "With HiQi, drivers can fill up their private or business vehicles and pay quickly, smartly, and most conveniently. However, we faced a significant challenge in how customers could top up their pre-pay accounts. We couldn't offer account-to-account transfers, which is often the most convenient way for people to add credit to their accounts."

"The partnership with Ecommpay has removed that barrier and, since joining forces, we have seen payments through the platform increase rapidly and customer satisfaction soar. The Ecommpay platform has also improved the speed and quality of information provided about payments."

The partnership has significantly impacted payment efficiency. One notable improvement has been the reduction in false negatives, which are payments incorrectly labelled as unsuccessful by open banking systems even though funds had been transferred. This change has resulted in improved operational efficiency, minimising the need for manual intervention and increasing overall customer satisfaction.

Since adopting Ecommpay's payment platform, HiQi has seen a steady rise in the number of payments processed through it. In just three months, Ecommpay's platform has grown from accounting for 5% of HiQi's total payment volume to over 20%.

Lourenço also highlighted the ease of integrating Ecommpay's technology: "Integration with the Ecommpay platform was quick and straightforward. Ecommpay has listened and taken time to truly understand our business and specific requirements. Throughout the process, everyone in the team, without exception, was incredibly available and always wanted to get the project up and running as quickly as possible."

Moshe Winegarten, Chief Revenue Officer at Ecommpay, commented, "Like Ecommpay, HiQi is an innovative company utilising the latest technology to simplify payments. We have worked closely with the HiQi team from day one to ensure we fully understand the business requirements so that we could develop the best possible solution. The result is that payments are much faster, enabling HiQi to have the confidence to meet the EU instant payments requirement, with secure and compliant payments."

The improved payment system is expected to support HiQi's customers across Portugal and Spain as the company continues to expand its mobile payment and fuel discount offering within the region.
