Gamma Expands CEO's Responsibilites to Drive Growth in Central & Northern Europe

Mon, 25th Sep 2023

Gamma Communications plc, a leading technology-based provider of communication services across Europe, has announced significant changes in its executive leadership, aimed at further expansion in central and northern Europe. The company revealed that Gerben Wijbenga, the current CEO of its Benelux business, will now also oversee the central and northern European region. This strategic shift comes in the wake of the retirement of Achim Hager, Founder of HFO and a significant figure in the German telecom landscape.

Founded in 1997 by Achim Hager, HFO rapidly ascended the ranks to become one of Germany's top SIP companies, excelling in both traditional voice products and next-generation IP-based solutions. Hager’s 25-year legacy is marked by dedication, innovation, and community-building in the DACH (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) region. His decision not to renew his contract in 2024 represents "the end of an era," according to the company's statement.

Wijbenga, who joined Gamma in 2020, brings over two decades of telecom experience, including work in France, Germany, and Benelux. His resumé boasts of prior roles at high-profile companies like KPN, Telefónica Deutschland, and Tele2. Wijbenga says, "Our German business has been built on long-lasting and strong relationships, over multiple years, by my esteemed colleague Achim Hager and his team. I will be working hard to retain and grow these relationships together with the strong teams we have at Gamma Deutschland as we and our partners look to capitalise on the growth opportunity in the DACH region.”

In a gracious gesture, Hager pledged his support during the transition period. “I will be available to Gerben Wijbenga and the German team throughout this transition, and will help in every way possible to pick up on and continue all the great initiatives we have been building," he comments. Hager also confirmed that he would continue to be a co-owner and shareholder of Gamma "for many years to come."

Gamma has expressed its gratitude to Achim Hager for his "years of service" and seems eagerly poised to march into the future under Gerben Wijbenga's leadership. The reshuffle reflects the firm's ambitious plan to capitalise on expanding opportunities in central and northern Europe, powered by Wijbenga’s extensive telecoms background and track record in driving growth.
