Eleanor Lightbody wins Tech Businesswoman of the Year award
Eleanor Lightbody, Chief Executive Officer of Luminance, has been named Tech Businesswoman of the Year at the 2025 UK Tech Awards, in recognition of her leadership in guiding the legal technology firm through a period of global expansion and commercial growth.
Leadership snapshot
Lightbody has steered Luminance through significant changes to its growth strategy, particularly by focusing on in-house legal teams and enterprise customers. Under her oversight, Luminance has grown its customer base to more than 1,000 organisations across 70 countries, with a presence in Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region.
Her efforts included leading the company through Series B and C funding rounds, raising more than USD $115 million to accelerate the development of Luminance's Legal-Grade AI platform and support global expansion.
Diversity push
Lightbody's leadership comes at a time when gender diversity in senior technology roles remains low. Fewer than 10% of funded legal-tech companies are led by women, and across the technology sector, women hold just 6% of CEO positions globally.
At Luminance, more than half of the executive team and board positions are occupied by women. This contrasts with broader industry statistics, where only 35% of technology executive leadership roles in the UK are held by women.
Customer focus
Luminance's product uses artificial intelligence to automate legal document review and workflow tasks for enterprise users. The company positions its multi-agent platform as a tool to convert legal documentation from an administrative function into a source of business insight.
Organisations in multiple sectors utilise the platform for contract analysis, compliance checks, and legal risk evaluation, according to company reports.
Industry context
The legal-tech sector has struggled with underrepresentation of women at the senior executive level. As the industry expands and attracts more investment, issues of diversity and leadership continue to draw focus from stakeholders and regulators alike.
"I'm thrilled to receive this award, but it really belongs to our incredible team. AI moves fast, which means we have to move even faster. Our team takes that challenge on every day, pushing the boundaries of what we can do for our customers. Together, we've scaled globally, delivered real impact, and shown what's possible when innovation meets execution," said Eleanor Lightbody, CEO, Luminance.
