BT launches UK-based sovereign platform for secure cloud & AI

Fri, 5th Dec 2025

BT has introduced a new sovereign platform to provide digital sovereignty services to public and private sector organisations in the UK. The platform aims to support the rollout of sovereign voice, cloud, and artificial intelligence (AI) services over the next few months.

Platform offering

The service will offer UK organisations greater control over operations, systems, and data on an infrastructure that is based within the UK and, where necessary, supported by UK-based staff. The company emphasises that this approach is designed to enhance resilience in response to global uncertainties and regulatory requirements.

The new platform will enable BT to offer its existing products and services with a sovereign option by the first half of 2026. This will allow customers to select the level of sovereignty that fits the needs of their organisation. The platform leverages BT's expertise in domestic network systems and data management for sensitive clients.

National initiatives

The launch aligns with the UK Government's broader strategy of boosting national growth through investment in AI and data centres. Sovereignty has recently become a focal point, particularly as organisations look to protect against developments outside the UK that could affect digital infrastructure and service continuity.

BT is involved in supporting this strategy as a founding member of the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum. It is also participating in government-led AI skills programmes to help power future digital infrastructure in the country.

Customer demand

According to BT, the new platform is a response to growing client demand for digital services that maintain data and operations within UK jurisdiction. This is particularly relevant for businesses with heightened security, compliance, and risk management requirements.

The platform promises further integration of sovereign voice, cloud, and AI technologies, which are increasingly integral to operations in both public and private sectors. The company claims its local infrastructure and expertise make it well-placed to deliver trusted sovereign solutions for organisations with specific regulatory or operational needs.

Sector context

Other technology providers in the UK and Europe have begun offering similar sovereign solutions as governments and enterprise clients place emphasis on data residency requirements. The need for sovereign controls has been underlined by recent geopolitical events and regulatory shifts relating to data protection and AI ethics.

Future roadmap

The sovereign platform will be expanded over the coming months, with existing BT services set to receive sovereign options. These enhancements are designed to help customers adapt their digital strategy to evolving legislative and operational requirements, as well as potential shifts in global technology policy.

"Sovereignty isn't simply a matter of compliance or risk management - it's key to unleashing the potential of AI, and ensuring resilient operations in an increasingly uncertain world. Our pioneering launch reflects BT's unique position as the digital backbone of the UK, and the only provider with the scale, capabilities and experience to enable true UK sovereign solutions," said Jon James, CEO, BT Business.

"Organisations are increasingly looking for sovereignty in their services and it's up to us to make sure we deliver for our customers. That means making sure we're offering the right sovereign solutions that ensure data and operations remain secure, compliant, resilient and future-proofed," said James.
