New ISO 42001 standard paves the way for AI accountability

Fri, 27th Sep 2024
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Alcumus' recently introduced ISO 42001 is the world's first artificial intelligence management system standard, designed to provide organisations involved in AI development and deployment with a structured and certifiable framework.

This new standard aims to foster transparency, trust, and responsible AI use across various industries, ranging from IT and telecommunications to healthcare, manufacturing, and automotive.

The standard highlights six key organisational roles: AI providers, AI producers, AI customers, AI partners, AI subjects, and relevant authorities.

These roles encompass a wide range of stakeholders, including entities offering AI platforms, developers, data providers, and policymakers. By addressing these roles, ISO/IEC 42001 provides a comprehensive ecosystem for AI, promoting responsible development and governance.

The introduction of this standard is expected to benefit multiple sectors. For instance, it outlines clear guidelines for AI providers, those who offer AI platforms or services, and AI producers, such as designers, developers, and testers.

The standard also addresses the needs of AI customers, who use these systems, and AI partners like system integrators and data providers. Additionally, it recognises AI subjects, individuals impacted by AI systems, and relevant authorities, including regulators and policymakers.

Training on the ISO/IEC 42001 standard is available for businesses seeking to implement and audit AI management systems effectively. Alcumus Academy, for example, provides tailored courses to meet the specific needs of organisations. The quality of the training has been widely recognised by professionals across industries.

"Having worked with a large number of their trainers, the high standards of training are institutionalised rather than being down to the individual auditors, and hence Alcumus have been listed as our ISO training organisation of choice," said Cam Pulham of Oil Spill Response.

Another company, Chubb Systems, highlighted the customer-centred approach taken by ISOQAR, an organisation providing audits on various standards.

"ISOQAR's ability to prioritise their customers' needs is very refreshing," commented Nichol Maher, Environmental Health & Safety Manager at Chubb Systems.

The benefits of certification in related standards like ISO 27001, which focuses on information security, have also been noted. Phil Robinson, Managing Director at Prism Infosec, remarked: "Gaining ISO 27001 certification has strengthened business resilience for our clients not just from a technical standpoint, but from a financial perspective too."

The comprehensive nature of ISOQAR's audits was praised by Platinum's Technical and Compliance Director, Edward Gee. "ISOQAR audits are very thorough and the reports issued are clear and easy to follow," he noted.

As AI continues to evolve, the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard is set to play a crucial role in helping organisations navigate the complexities of AI adoption while ensuring responsible and transparent practices. This new standard provides a clear framework that supports organisations in not only developing but also deploying AI technologies in a manner that fosters trust among users, customers, and regulatory authorities.

Alcumus Academy's role in providing training for this standard has been recognised as essential in ensuring that businesses are equipped to implement and maintain compliance with the new AI management system. "Having worked with a large number of their trainers, the high standards of training are institutionalised," reiterated Pulham of Oil Spill Response.

With ISO/IEC 42001 now in place, industries across the globe are expected to see more structured and responsible AI practices, helping to mitigate risks and enhance the benefits of AI technologies.
