N-able enhances Cove protection with Fortified Copies feature

N-able has introduced Fortified Copies from Cove Data Protection, a new feature designed to enhance backup immutability by automating the process.

This feature is a response to findings from Sophos indicating that 94% of ransomware victims have their backups targeted, highlighting the increasing importance of immutability in data protection.

Fortified Copies is incorporated into Cove's architecture as an automatic feature, offering an extra layer of protection for servers, workstations, and Microsoft 365 backups without additional management or cost implications.

Such backups are immutable, preventing any alterations or deletions by cyber threats due to the inaccessibility through Cove's management console, API, or CLI. These Fortified Copies are created hourly and retained for 30 days without manual input.

With the rise in ransomware attacks targeting backups to hinder recovery attempts, traditional solutions often involve hefty storage and administrative costs and fail to protect against deep-level cyber-attacks like factory resets of entire storage systems.

The architecture of Cove is described as more cyber resilient than traditional local-first backup solutions, as it uses an N-able worldwide private cloud for primary backup storage, enhancing network security. Fortified Copies serves to further this protection.

"Unlike other solutions, there's nothing to manage. You don't need to make choices about which devices or data sources 'deserve' immutability or configure complex retention policies.
