IXL Learning acquires MyTutor to boost UK online tutoring

Fri, 30th May 2025

IXL Learning has acquired MyTutor, the UK-based online tutoring platform providing services to families and schools across the country.

MyTutor, which is used by more than 200,000 families and 40 per cent of UK secondary schools, will join the IXL Learning portfolio as the company seeks to expand its presence across Europe and provide support to a wider range of learners and subjects.

The acquisition comes against a backdrop of growing demand for tutoring in the UK, coinciding with increased tax on private school fees and a 27 per cent year-on-year rise in new parent sign-ups to MyTutor's platform.

Paul Mishkin, Chief Executive Officer of IXL Learning, emphasised the importance of tutor-student connections in learning outcomes. "Effective tutoring isn't just about getting extra help. It's about who gives it. When a tutor understands your struggle, you get ahead," he said.

He added, "MyTutor's refreshingly different approach creates a natural connection between students and tutors—one that helps learners feel seen, supported and engaged. We're excited to work together to bring this kind of meaningful support to even more people."

MyTutor was established in 2013 with the objective of providing personalised, one-on-one tutoring accessible to a broad range of learners. The platform connects students with high-achieving university tutors, offering expertise in more than 30 subjects, including Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as qualifications such as GCSEs and A-Levels.

The service utilises live video, collaborative whiteboards and lesson recordings to support learning remotely. MyTutor reports that its students typically achieve a full grade of progress in a single term, which it states is more than 2.5 times the progress of their peers. The platform has delivered over 4 million lessons and works with more than 1,600 secondary schools nationwide.

The company has previously raised a total of GBP £34.4 million in funding over several rounds. As part of the acquisition, MyTutor will broaden its offerings and seek to serve a more diverse group of learners, utilising technology such as AI-powered lesson planning, adaptive exam question practice and automated lesson reporting.

Bertie Hubbard, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of MyTutor, commented on the company's future direction. "At MyTutor, our mission is to transform the lives of 1,000,000 learners. As the education landscape evolves, we've been looking for the right partner to help us take the next step—that brings experience of operating at scale, shares our commitment to impact and enables us to build for the long term," he said.

He added, "With millions of learners on their platforms and nearly three decades of founder-led growth, IXL Learning brings both the values and the track record to help us achieve that."

The acquisition is described by both companies as a strategic effort to address ongoing challenges faced by the UK education system, including teacher shortages and increased demand for personalised support. IXL Learning's involvement is also part of its broader global strategy, with company operations in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, China, Germany and Latin America.

IXL Learning owns several other education platforms, including Wyzant, an American tutoring network, and Rosetta Stone, which provides language learning solutions. Its suite of brands also covers digital learning resources such as Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, and Vocabulary.com.
