Giesecke+Devrient unveils compact IoT package tracker

Yesterday

Giesecke+Devrient has launched a new Smart Label, a compact tracking solution designed to transform any package into an Internet of Things (IoT) device.

The Smart Label is ultra-thin, only slightly larger than a credit card, and aims to provide accurate location tracking for parcel delivery, shipping, fleet management, and monitoring luxury goods. Developed in collaboration with hardware partner Sensos, it offers cost-effective and accurate location tracking.

The solution includes hardware, an integrated subscriber identity module (iSIM), IoT connectivity, and a platform for managing connections and firmware updates. The incorporation of smart motion sensors allows the detection of movement and acceleration, supported by Global Positioning System (GPS) accuracy, which has been tested to ensure precision within 10 metres in ideal conditions.

Additional features include an open-close sensor for tamper protection, automated proof of delivery, and a temperature monitor, useful for ensuring the quality of perishable goods. The label is easy to use, activating upon application to an item, and is both reusable and certified for air travel.

Sharath Muddaiah, Head of Portfolio Strategy for IoT Solutions at G+D, explained, "G+D has been dedicated to designing robust and innovative solutions for the transport and logistics market, and is the market leader of solar-powered trackers with over 180,000 connected devices in the field."

"Following the launch of our award-winning first-generation Smart Label solution in 2023, we have been working on the development of an even more compact and highly accurate solution. The G+D Smart Label provides a single end-to-end solution, including dedicated service support and warranty from one source. Our industry has seen many a solution which, once sold, has limited support, and we are here to set a new trend!"

The Smart Label can be applied to various scenarios, from parcel and shipment tracking to tracking high-value assets. Track & Pay, an early adopter of the technology, uses the label to integrate shipment tracking with payment processing, automatically triggering payments upon a shipment's arrival for seamless transactions.

Joerg Hoerster, Founder and CEO of TNP Global Trade GmbH, stated, "We believe in Track & Pay's ability to revolutionize the global finance supply chain, offering a much more secure and fraud-proof solution than the common letter of credit. The Smart Label's slick size and active tracking capacity makes it a competitive tracking solution which is why we chose to offer it to our Track & Pay clients."
