Eclipse unveils Theia AI & Theia IDE for open-source AI

Today

The Eclipse Foundation has announced Theia AI and the AI-powered Theia IDE, two significant developments aimed at enhancing open-source AI capabilities for developers and tool builders.

Theia AI is an open framework that facilitates the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into custom tools and Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). It aims to empower developers by enabling workflows that are agentic, context-aware, and customisable.

According to Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, "Proprietary AI development platforms are locking developers and tool builders into inflexible, opaque, and single vendor ecosystems. With Theia AI, we are putting control back in the hands of developers, enabling them to integrate AI on their own terms - fully open, extensible, and adaptable to their needs. Whether building custom AI-driven tools or leveraging the Theia IDE with built-in AI support, Theia AI ensures that developers remain in control of their data, workflows, and strategic direction."

Theia AI is part of the Eclipse Theia tool platform and gives developers comprehensive control over AI integration. This flexibility allows developers to choose the most suitable LLMs, whether cloud-based, self-hosted, or fully local, and manage every aspect of AI capabilities. Tool developers can design AI-driven user experiences tailored to their visions, such as interactive chat interfaces, AI integrated code editors, or customised UI elements.

The AI integration facilitated by Theia AI has undergone extensive beta testing and real-world application use, and is now available for public use. It connects developers with the technological tools to craft unique and advanced AI functionalities suited to their domain-specific requirements.

The AI-powered Theia IDE, now available in alpha, is built on the Theia AI framework and aims to revolutionise developer productivity by embedding AI-driven functionalities within the development process. These capabilities include intelligent coding agents, AI-powered terminal support, and context-sensitive assistants.

Importantly, the Theia IDE ensures developers can connect to any AI model, maintaining flexibility and adapting to the latest models without vendor constraints. Through Model Contextual Protocol (MCP) integration, the IDE supports connections between AI-driven workflows and external tools and contextual data, enhancing both automation and interoperability.

Additionally, the integration of SCANOSS within the Theia IDE helps analyse AI-generated code for open source licence compliance, thus supporting developers in mitigating associated legal and operational risks when using AI-generated code.

Transparency and control are central to Theia IDE's design, in stark contrast to many proprietary solutions. Developers retain full oversight and can modify AI behaviours, ensuring transparency in AI processes. With features like customisable prompts, flexible LLM selection, and clear data exchange, the Theia IDE supports open, collaborative innovation by encouraging developers to refine, extend, and contribute to the evolution of the AI-driven development environment.

The Eclipse Foundation underscores the importance of open and adaptable AI development tools in light of increasing proprietary AI solutions. Theia AI and Theia IDE embody the values of openness, control, and community-driven innovation, providing developers and tool builders with substantial AI capabilities.

The Eclipse Foundation, headquartered in Brussels, continues to position itself at the forefront of next-generation AI development tools, offering alternatives to closed ecosystems.
