Deutsche Bahn adopts Getac rugged laptops for train maintenance

Wed, 12th Jun 2024

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has incorporated Getac’s rugged S410 laptops into its operational workflows for train inspection and maintenance. Implementing these advanced laptops aims to support digitalisation and automation processes, which are crucial for ensuring swift and efficient train operations.

The partnership with Getac was facilitated through IT-HAUS GmbH, a company based in Föhren near Trier, Germany, which won the corresponding tender to supply the devices to DB. The acquisition of the S410 laptops is part of Deutsche Bahn's broader strategy to minimise train downtimes by expediting maintenance and repairs.

Getac’s rugged S410 laptops, specifically designed to withstand harsh working conditions, are expected to bolster Deutsche Bahn’s inspection and maintenance activities. The laptops will be essential for various tasks, including revisions, general inspections, automated reporting, and documentation. By utilising these devices, Deutsche Bahn aims to enhance the overall efficiency of its operational workflows.

Eric Yeh, Managing Director of Getac Technology GmbH, expressed pride in supporting Deutsche Bahn with their rugged computing solutions. He highlighted the S410 laptops' power, reliability, and ease of use, noting that they embed 5G technology to facilitate a high degree of digitalisation. According to Yeh, the S410 laptops are particularly well-suited for the demanding conditions experienced in rail operations.

An essential aspect of the implementation is the ability of Getac S410 laptops to handle multiple system operations simultaneously. This capability is crucial for Deutsche Bahn’s service technicians, who often need to work on various trains with different systems concurrently. The laptops allow the creation of detailed reports for trains involved in accidents and facilitate troubleshooting activities, both in workshops and under adverse weather conditions.

The devices also feature easy-to-read displays and illuminated keyboards, alongside various essential connectivity options such as RS232 and RJ45 ports. This combination ensures that the laptops are not only robust but also practical for use in diverse environments, whether indoors or outdoors.

Deutsche Bahn places significant emphasis on ensuring secure procedures in case of unexpected failures. To this end, IT-HAUS provides a Hot Swap Service and the Getac Self-Maintainer programme, both of which contribute to reducing operational downtimes and maintaining a high level of service continuity.

Getac S410 laptops are additionally used to automate the reporting of vehicle component conditions directly to maintenance workshops. This feature streamlines communication and ensures that spare parts are automatically provisioned when necessary. The integration of these digital diagnostics and inspection systems effectively supports DB employees, reducing their workload and enhancing overall operational efficiency.
