Commvault launches Cloud Rewind for enhanced resilience

Today

Commvault has introduced its new Cloud Rewind offering designed to enhance cyber resilience for organisations prioritising cloud-based operations.

The new Cloud Rewind integrates cloud-native distributed application recovery and rebuild capabilities derived from Commvault's acquisition of Appranix. This solution aims to assist cloud-first organisations in rapidly recuperating their operational capabilities after experiencing a cyberattack.

According to Commvault, while restoring data is critical following an attack, the significant challenge lies in rebuilding the distributed cloud applications that operate and maintain that data. Enterprises often utilise numerous cloud applications across various domains such as finance, human resources, and operations. Following an attack, organisations face prolonged periods before resuming normal operations, with research indicating a duration exceeding a week in some cases.

Cloud Rewind promises to transform and streamline cloud cyber recoveries by enabling swift restoration of an organisation's entire cloud application and data environment. It offers automated recovery by merging data recovery with cloud-native application and infrastructure rebuild automation. This integration aims to allow customers to resume business operations within minutes following a cloud services disruption or ransomware incident.

The new offering includes several advanced capabilities. Resource discovery provides automatic identification and cataloguing of all cloud components, ensuring comprehensive visibility into assets requiring protection and recovery. App-centric dependency mapping analyses and delineates the relationships between cloud components, expediting the rebuild process by aligning all connected resources and services.

Drift analysis as part of Cloud Rewind assists in reverting restored systems to their correct configurations, continuously monitoring for any deviations. Automated cyber recovery testing captures data alongside applications, infrastructure, and network configurations, maintaining a complete operational blueprint and reducing recovery guesswork.

On-demand cloud reconstruction enables efficient rebuilding of data environments and supporting infrastructure, offering organisations a secure cloud environment ready for use after a disturbance. Moreover, integrated application-centric cyber recovery and disaster recovery ensure rapid recovery from both short-term failures and significant cyber incidents.

The Cloud Rewind solution supports major cloud platforms, including AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure, allowing for customer flexibility in cloud choices.

In conjunction with Cloud Rewind, Commvault is also launching a Cyber Resilience Dashboard. This tool facilitates ongoing ransomware readiness assessments and delivers insights for enhancing resilience and recovery readiness. The dashboard assesses data estate components, such as testing frequency and availability of immutable air-gapped copies of critical data, and offers organisations a readiness grade alongside recommendations.

Venkata Sudhakar Nagandla, Senior Vice President & Global Head-IT Infrastructure & Cloud at Allcargo Group Companies, commented, "Commvault's Cloud Rewind enhances data management by covering every step of a data breach – protection, recovery, and rebuilding. Additionally, we can achieve better RTO and RPO to meet our business needs without requiring a parallel hot standby IT infrastructure and with minimal manual effort."

Brian Brockway, Chief Technology Officer at Commvault, stated, "What we are doing with Cloud Rewind is unlike anything offered on the market today. In the ransomware era, recovering data is important, but it's table stakes. We're ushering in an entirely new chapter in cyber resilience that not only expedites data recovery, but recovery of cloud applications. This is the gold standard in recovery for a cloud-first world."

Melinda Marks, Practice Director, Cybersecurity at Enterprise Strategy Group, added, "With Cloud Rewind, Commvault helps organisations quickly recover in the case of a cybersecurity incident. Its resource discovery, dependency mapping, drift analysis, and automated cloud reconstruction capabilities provide much-needed relief for teams to save them from the intricate and time-consuming process of rebuilding their applications. For enterprises managing hundreds of cloud services, this is a huge advantage for minimising downtime after a breach."

Cloud Rewind and the Cyber Resilience Dashboard are set to become available in the coming months.
