ChatGPT introduces GPT Store for customised AI resources
Two months after announcing the arrival of GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers), over 3 million custom versions of ChatGPT have been created by users. To further enable this flurry of creativity, a new GPT Store is being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users to allow for the discovery and utilisation of useful and popular GPTs.
The GPT Store, which offers a diverse range of GPTs developed by partners and the wider community, will enable users to peruse what's trending on a community leaderboard, and browse through categories such as DALLE, writing, research, programming, education, and lifestyle. Going forward, the store aims to highlight useful and impactful GPTs on a weekly basis. The early offerings include a range of useful tools such as personalised trail recommendations from AllTrails, results from 200 million academic papers via Consensus, coding tutorials from Khan Academy's Code Tutor, designing capabilities via Canva, reading recommendations from Books, and an anytime, anywhere tutoring service in math and science from the CK-12 Flexi AI tutor.
Creating a GPT doesn't require any coding skills and those interested in sharing their GPTs to be listed in the store can do so by submitting their creations for review. In order to maintain a high level of quality and safety, the system will comprise of both human and automated checks. Users are also encouraged to be active participants in maintaining the quality of the store through reporting any GPTs that might raise concerns.
An announcement pertaining to remuneration was also made. Starting the first quarter of the year, a GPT builder revenue programme will be launched where US-based builders will be paid based on user engagement with their GPTs. Specific details on payment criteria will be shared in the future.
Team and Enterprise customers of ChatGPT are offered enhanced admin controls as part of their package. As part of the announcement, a new ChatGPT Team plan has been launched which gives team customers access to a private section of the GPT Store. This section is filled with GPTs securely published to their workspace. In addition, Team and Enterprise customers will soon have access to GPT Store, which promises to respect user privacy by not using conversations with GPTs to improve the company models.
Custom versions of ChatGPT called GPTs were introduced on November 6, 2023, as a means for anyone to create a tailored ChatGPT version to suit their personal or professional needs. These could then be shared with others. It allowed for personalisation of a ChatGPT version to fit a specific purpose or suit a particular way in which a user might wish to utilise it, thus shifting the control into the hands of the users.
With its faith squarely pinned on the creative offerings of the community, the goal of rolling out the GPT Store is to empower builders without needing prior coding knowledge. While the most innovative GPTs are expected to emerge from the community, the GPT Store aims to offer a platform for their handy creations and, in doing so, help users access useful tools more efficiently.
