Adobe has debuted its latest offering in the realm of creative, generative AI models - the Firefly Image 3 Foundation Model. Its introduction was announced at 'MAX London - The Creativity Conference. The new model is set to offer users an unprecedented step forward in terms of quality and control and is available to try today in Photoshop and Adobe's Firefly web application.
The new Image 3 Foundation model aims to bring a new era of advancement in quality and control to its users. This includes improved image generation quality, understanding of prompts, and impressive discernment of detail and variety. The model also boasts significant improvements that will facilitate quicker creative expression and ideation. Still in its beta phase, it offers photo-realistic quality in a manner never before seen in Adobe's suite, with improvements in lighting, positioning, detail, text display, and more.
Pioneered by a fresh-style engine, Firefly Image 3's new auto-stylisation capabilities deliver higher-quality outputs with ample variety. This allows users to exercise more control and personalisation over the styles of images they produce. Apart from adding styles, colours, and backgrounds, users can now experiment with subject poses.
Ely Greenfield, chief technology officer, Digital Media at Adobe highlighted the influence this model is expected to have. He said, "In just over a year, Firefly has become the image generation tool of choice, used by millions of creators to ideate every day, and we're just getting started. As we continue to advance the state of the art with Image 3 Foundation Model, we cannot wait to see how our creative community will push the bounds of what's possible with this beta build."
Since its debut in March 2023, Firefly has generated over seven billion images worldwide, showing its immense popularity and influence within a year. It has been integrated into workflows for Adobe apps such as Photoshop, Express, Illustrator, Substance 3D, and now InDesign, making it an extremely versatile tool.
Users will witness significant improvements in illustrations with the new Firefly model, enabling them to quickly create icons, logos, raster images, and line art. Now in beta, users can access this via the Firefly web application, and Adobe offers both free and paid plans, inclusive of Generative Credits for the use of AI powered by Firefly in Adobe applications.
Users can be assured that Adobe Firefly has been trained on licensed content like Adobe Stock. It respects copyright and intellectual property rights, and Adobe leverages a multi-layered, continuous review and moderation approach to block and remove content that violates its policies. Users are also covered by IP indemnification for Firefly-generated content.
Adobe's commitment to responsible innovation is clearly seen in its adherence to principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency when it comes to developing AI. In an Adobe study, 76% of U.S. consumers emphasised the importance of knowing if online content is AI-generated. To address this, Adobe Firefly automatically attaches Content Credentials to AI-generated content. Similar to a nutrition label on food items, these credentials can provide more information about the digital content, including if AI was used in the creation or editing process.
